Cyclonic Circulation Forms Over Interior Odisha

A cyclonic circulation has formed over interior Odisha and its adjoining regions, triggering widespread concern over changing weather conditions in the state. According to meteorological updates, this system is likely to bring rainfall across Odisha, with several districts already placed under alert.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for five districts, including Sambalpur, Angul, Keonjhar, Boudh, and Kandhamal, where thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain are expected.

Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm Warning Issued

Weather officials have predicted thunderstorms with lightning and moderate to heavy rainfall in several parts of Odisha. The system is currently active, and its impact is expected to intensify over the next few days.

Wind speeds may reach 50–60 kmph in some regions during intense weather activity, prompting caution among residents.

Possible Cyclone Formation Under Watch

Concerns are rising over whether the current system could intensify into a cyclone. Meteorologists have indicated that a low-pressure area may develop between May 8 and 9 near the Kerala coast, which could further influence weather patterns across the Indian seas.

However, experts have clarified that the exact direction and intensity of the system remain uncertain at this stage and will become clearer only after the circulation strengthens.

Uncertainty Over Direction: Arabian Sea or Bay of Bengal?

Weather models are currently showing mixed signals regarding the system’s path. Some international forecasting models suggest a possible development in the Bay of Bengal, while others indicate activity over the Arabian Sea.

Due to this uncertainty, meteorologists have urged caution and stated that a clear forecast will emerge only after the system becomes better organised in the coming days.

Increased Pre-Monsoon Activity Over Odisha

Alongside the cyclonic system, Odisha is also witnessing strong pre-monsoon (Kalbaisakhi) activity. Between May 4 and May 6, several parts of western, coastal, and northern Odisha are expected to experience thunderstorms and rainfall.

Another spell of intense weather is likely between May 8 and May 10, when Kalbaisakhi activity may peak again across the state.

Orange Warning for Multiple Districts

Due to the expected severe weather conditions, IMD has issued an orange warning for several districts. The alert highlights the possibility of:

• Thunderstorms with lightning
• Heavy rainfall in isolated areas
• Strong surface winds
• Temporary disruption in daily life and transport
