Severe Heatwave Grips State; IMD Issues Multiple Warnings

Scorching Conditions to Continue for Next Five Days
The state is reeling under intense heat, with extremely high temperatures and uncomfortable humidity levels persisting across regions. According to the Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre, the prevailing weather conditions are expected to continue for the next five days, offering little relief to residents.

Yellow Warning for Warm Nights and Humid Conditions
The weather department has issued a yellow warning for warm night conditions in Sambalpur and Balangir districts. Additionally, 11 coastal districts are likely to experience hot and humid weather, prompting further alerts from the authorities.

Heatwave Warning in Western Districts
A heatwave warning has been issued for Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, and Balangir districts. The intensity of the heat is expected to rise further from April 21, with no significant change in temperature likely over the next 6 to 7 days.

In the last 24 hours, at least 16 districts recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. Titlagarh reported the highest temperature at 42.7 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest places in the state.

Rain and Thunderstorm Likely in Some Districts
Meanwhile, the weather department has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in seven districts—Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj. A yellow warning has been issued for these areas as well.

Schools Closed in Several Districts Due to Extreme Heat
Amid the severe heatwave, district administrations have ordered the closure of educational institutions in multiple districts to ensure student safety.

In Khordha district, all schools will remain closed from April 20 to April 23. The closure applies to both government and private schools, as well as Anganwadi centres.

Authorities in Sambalpur, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, and Jharsuguda have directed that schools, Anganwadi centres, and technical institutions remain closed from April 20 until further notice. In Boudh, institutions will remain shut until April 22, while Mayurbhanj has declared closure from April 20 to April 23.

Earlier, Balangir, Subarnapur, and Kalahandi districts had also announced school closures from April 18 to April 21 due to the ongoing heatwave.

Authorities Urge Caution
Officials have advised people to take necessary precautions, avoid exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours, and stay hydrated as the state continues to face extreme summer conditions.

A low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal, triggering a weather alert across coastal Odisha, West Bengal, and parts of Bangladesh. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the system developed on Sunday afternoon, accompanied by a cyclonic circulation slanting southwestward and extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level. The circulation is currently affecting areas up to the coasts of West Bengal and north Odisha.

Second Weather System Over Madhya Pradesh Intensifies Rain Risk

Simultaneously, another low-pressure system has formed over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining regions, increasing the potential for widespread rain. Odisha, in particular, is preparing for heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours.

Orange Alert for Five Odisha Districts

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Bhubaneswar has issued an orange warning for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sambalpur, Bargarh, and Sundargarh districts. These regions are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rain, along with wind speeds ranging from 30 to 40 kmph within the next 24 hours. Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel.

Yellow Warning for Coastal and Interior Districts

Several other districts, including Angul, Dhenkanal, Deogarh, Nayagarh, Kalahandi, Koraput, and Rayagada, are also likely to receive heavy rainfall and have been placed under a yellow warning. Coastal Odisha is particularly vulnerable, with consistent downpours forecast over the next few days.

Rain to Continue Until July 18, Peak Expected on July 15

According to the IMD, the most intense rainfall is expected through July 15, with a slight reduction in intensity afterward. However, light to moderate rain and thundershowers will persist at scattered locations across the state until at least July 18.

Significant Rainfall Recorded Across Odisha

In the last 24 hours, scattered regions of Odisha have already experienced light to moderate rain. Heavy showers were reported in interior south Odisha, with Kalahandi’s TH Rampur recording the highest at 7 cm. Other districts such as Cuttack, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, and Nayagarh recorded rainfall between 5 and 6 cm in isolated areas.

IMD Issues Red Alert in Odisha as Bay of Bengal Low Pressure Triggers Heavy Rainfall

A low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal has triggered extreme weather conditions across Odisha, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts on Wednesday. The IMD has forecast very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in these areas over the next 24 hours.

Red and Orange Alerts Across Odisha

According to the IMD, rainfall in red alert zones could range between 12 to 20 cm, with isolated areas possibly receiving more than 20 cm. An orange alert has also been issued in five districts, forecasting very heavy rainfall ranging from 7 to 11 cm.

Additionally, yellow alerts have been declared in six districts—Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, and Bargarh—indicating the likelihood of heavy showers. All remaining districts in the state are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall, with the wet spell forecast to continue until June 23.

Impact and Warnings from IMD

Manorama Mohanty, Director of the IMD’s Bhubaneswar Centre, confirmed that the intensifying low-pressure system is leading to widespread precipitation across the state. She cautioned about possible waterlogging, flash floods, and landslides, particularly in low-lying and hilly areas.

The IMD has also issued warnings for squally winds reaching 50–60 kmph, advising fishermen to avoid venturing into the northern Bay of Bengal until June 20.

Record Rainfall and Forecast Accuracy

The past 24 hours marked one of the wettest periods this season, with Kusumi in Mayurbhanj recording 136 mm of rainfall. The Bharat Forecast System, a new addition to the IMD’s predictive tools, has been credited with improving the accuracy of such forecasts.

Rainfall across Odisha last week stood at 287.1 mm, a staggering 451% increase from the normal weekly average of 52.1 mm, as per IMD data.

Disruption and Emergency Response

Flooding of farmlands, traffic disruptions, and inundation of low-lying areas have been reported or are expected as the rain continues. The state government has deployed disaster response teams, although some rural areas with poor drainage infrastructure remain vulnerable to flooding.

The IMD’s warnings have led to heightened preparedness across districts, with authorities urging residents to exercise caution and limit movement during periods of intense rainfall.

As Odisha braces for continued monsoon activity, the state’s systems and day-to-day life may face significant disruption until at least June 23.
