Mercury Likely to Cross 40°C in Western Odisha

The temperature in Odisha is set to rise significantly, with western parts of the state expected to witness temperatures crossing 40°C in the coming days. The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions, warning of intense heat and humidity across coastal districts and adjoining areas from April 11 to April 16.

Yellow Alert for Coastal Districts

A heatwave warning has been issued for districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khordha, Puri, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati for the next 24 hours. The weather department has predicted a rise in day temperatures by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius, leading to uncomfortable and humid conditions.

Bhubaneswar to Experience Sultry Weather

The capital city Bhubaneswar is also expected to experience severe heat and humidity. Temperatures are likely to increase by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius, with the mercury expected to reach around 37°C by April 14. Similar conditions are expected in Cuttack as well. Coastal regions may see humidity levels around 75%, making the weather more oppressive.

Heatwave Warning for Western Districts

The Special Relief Commissioner’s office has issued a heatwave warning for western Odisha, particularly for April 13 and 14. District collectors have been advised to take necessary precautionary measures. By April 13, temperatures in interior districts may touch 40°C, while coastal areas may record temperatures between 35°C and 37°C.

Hot winds are expected to blow across interior Odisha, with a significant difference between day and night temperatures. People have been advised to avoid stepping out between 11 AM and 3 PM and take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Thunderstorm Activity to Decline

The Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has indicated that the chances of Kalbaisakhi (nor’wester) storms will decrease after the next 24 hours. While isolated thunderstorms with lightning may occur in a few places on Sunday and Monday, overall weather conditions will remain predominantly dry and hot.

Continued Heatwave Conditions Till April 16

From Saturday onwards, districts like Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati are expected to experience persistent hot and humid conditions till April 16. Additionally, districts such as Sambalpur, Bolangir, and Bargarh are likely to face heatwave conditions starting April 13.

On Friday, at least eight places in the state recorded temperatures above 37°C, with Boudh at 39°C, Titlagarh at 38.5°C, Hirakud at 38°C, and Nuapada at 38°C, indicating the intensifying heat across Odisha.
