Onion prices have suddenly surged across several parts of India ahead of the festive season, adding to household expenses. Retail prices that were earlier around ₹30–35 per kg have risen to ₹60–65 per kg in several markets.

The price rise has been reported across major markets, including Delhi-NCR and Nashik, with consumers feeling the impact on their daily kitchen budgets. According to the Department of Consumer Affairs, the average retail price of onions is around ₹42 per kg, nearly 19–20% higher than a month ago.

In Delhi-NCR, onions are reportedly selling at ₹60–65 per kg in vegetable markets. Nashik has witnessed an increase of more than 70% in onion prices over the past month.

Government Plans Buffer Stock Release

In response to the sudden price increase, the government is preparing to release onions from its buffer stock and supply them to cities facing shortages and higher prices.

The government has maintained that domestic onion production remains broadly similar to last year and that sufficient stocks are available to meet demand in the coming months. Officials have also pointed out that onion prices generally rise during August and September due to weather conditions and supply-chain factors.

Sugar Prices Add to Festive Pressure

The onion price surge comes at a time when sugar prices have also increased across the country. Retail sugar prices have reportedly crossed ₹65 per kg in some markets, with prices rising by around 15% in a month.

The rise in sugar prices has triggered a political debate, with opposition parties alleging that diversion of sugarcane towards ethanol production is reducing sugar availability and pushing up prices.

The Centre has rejected the claim, maintaining that there is no shortage of sugar and that ethanol production is not responsible for the price rise.

Indian sugar industry representatives have also said that adequate stocks are available. They attributed the price increase to lower sugarcane production due to weather conditions, higher crushing rates in Maharashtra, varietal issues in Uttar Pradesh and increased demand during the festive season.

Fuel Prices Increased for Third Time in 10 Days

Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, the burden of inflation continues to grow on common people in India as petrol and diesel prices have once again been increased across the country.

On Saturday, petrol prices were hiked by 87 paise per litre, while diesel prices increased by 91 paise per litre. This marks the third fuel price hike within the last 10 days.

Fuel Prices Up by Nearly ₹5 in 10 Days

Earlier, on May 15, petrol and diesel prices were increased by ₹3 per litre each. Again, on May 19, petrol became costlier by 87 paise and diesel by 91 paise.

With the latest revision, fuel prices have gone up by nearly ₹5 per litre over the past 10 days, adding pressure on household expenses and transportation costs.

New Fuel Prices in Delhi

Following the latest hike:

• Petrol price in Delhi has increased from ₹98.64 per litre to ₹99.51 per litre.
• Diesel price has risen from ₹91.58 per litre to ₹92.49 per litre.

The repeated rise in fuel prices is expected to impact the prices of essential commodities and transportation services across the country.

The continuous increase in petrol and diesel prices has raised concerns over inflation and the rising cost of living. Experts believe global crude oil market fluctuations and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are contributing to the recent fuel price surge.
