The Pew Research Centre’s extensive study on global perceptions of India provides us with new information. They asked people in 24 places from 8 January to 26 April 2025. They found that 47% like India, 38% don’t, and 13% can’t decide.

India often looks like a key player on the world stage with smart moves in dealing with others. The majority of people view India favourably. A series of events in April, including a troubling incident in Pahalgam and new US fees on goods from India, indicated that some people do not view India positively. Doubts also arose, which could damage India’s global reputation.

Help From Key Places.

The report indicates that many people in countries such as Kenya, the UK, and Israel are fans of India, with six out of ten or more expressing their support. Germany, Japan, Indonesia, and Nigeria also back it, liking India’s smart moves and bigger role. In the UK, 60% are fans, while in America and Canada, just under half like what they see.

India got a warm “hi” from Kenya and Nigeria due to tighter ties with Africa. This got a boost from the 2024 launch of the India-South Africa Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, agreements such as I2U2 and UAE 1U2 have maintained India’s popularity in Israel, despite a decline of 11 points in the approval rating since 2023.

Where It’s Not So Great

However, the study also identifies areas of concern. Turkey and Australia don’t feel good about India; in Australia, that hasn’t changed since 2024. Argentina and Brazil feel the same. But South Africa went big with support, 46% thumbs up, 17 points more than in 2023! However, South Korea’s approval rating dropped by 16 points after India resumed relations with North Korea in December 2024.

In the US and South Korea, views split. This shows India brings mixed feelings. Additionally, in many countries, men tend to have a better view of India than women, with significant differences observed in Japan, the Netherlands, Germany, Argentina, and France.

This report by Pew comes as people observe India’s role in the world following difficult times, such as the Kashmir conflict and trade disputes with the US. However, India remains strong in many areas due to economic growth, advancements in technology, and proactive measures taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, despite the challenges.
