Modi Begins Crucial Italy Leg of European Tour

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Rome on Tuesday evening for the final and most significant phase of his five-nation European tour. The visit comes at the special invitation of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and marks Modi’s first official bilateral visit to Italy.

Welcoming Modi warmly, Meloni shared a selfie with the Indian Prime Minister on social media and wrote, “Welcome to Rome, my friend,” highlighting the growing personal and diplomatic bond between the two leaders.

Focus on Defence, Technology and Global Cooperation

The visit is being seen as a major step toward strengthening strategic and economic relations between India and Italy. Both leaders are expected to hold extensive bilateral discussions on defence cooperation, advanced technology, global security and economic partnerships.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, this will be the eighth meeting between Modi and Meloni since 2023, reflecting the deepening ties between the two nations.

The leaders are also expected to review progress under the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–29 and discuss cooperation in counter-terror financing and global security initiatives.

India-Italy Trade Relations Growing Stronger

Italy is currently India’s fourth-largest trading partner within the European Union. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached nearly 14.25 billion euros in 2025, and both sides are working toward an ambitious target of increasing trade to 20 billion euros by 2029.

Italian companies have significantly expanded investments in India in recent years, reflecting strong investor confidence. Meanwhile, Indian companies are also strengthening their presence in Europe.

The acquisition of Italy’s Iveco Group by Tata Motors is being viewed as a major boost for India’s industrial footprint in the European market.

New Opportunities in Defence and Innovation

India and Italy are now exploring joint development and co-production of military equipment, which could open a new chapter in defence cooperation between the two countries.

Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto had recently visited India to discuss future defence collaboration frameworks.

Under the 2025–27 cooperation programme, both countries are also planning joint projects in quantum technology, artificial intelligence and clean energy. Experts believe these partnerships could significantly strengthen digital innovation and sustainable growth in both nations.

Indian Community and Educational Links Expand

Italy is home to nearly 1.87 lakh to 2.5 lakh Indians, making it one of the largest Indian diaspora communities in Europe.

The Migration and Mobility Agreement between the two nations has also made travel and educational exchanges easier. Currently, more than 5,100 Indian students are studying in Italy, highlighting the growing academic and cultural relationship between the two countries.

Modi to Meet Italian President

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi is also expected to meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella and interact with leading business figures from both countries.

He will also visit the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization to reaffirm India’s commitment toward global food security and sustainable development.
