In yet another flashpoint at the volatile Durand Line, Pakistani and Afghan forces exchanged gunfire late Friday night, reigniting fears of a broader military escalation. The clash, which lasted several hours, unfolded across the border areas of Chaman in Pakistan and Spin Boldak in Afghanistan — regions long marred by hostilities and mistrust.

Midnight Standoff Erupts Into Heavy Firing

Eyewitnesses reported that the situation escalated around midnight when a tense standoff suddenly spiraled into an armed confrontation. Both sides opened fire, and illumination rounds lit up the night sky. Although no casualties have been reported so far, the exchange underscored the fragility of peace along the 2,600 km-long border, disputed for decades.

The Durand Line — a contentious boundary since its creation — remains one of the region’s most volatile flashpoints, frequently witnessing skirmishes between border guards.

Both Governments Trade Accusations

Pakistan and Afghanistan quickly shifted into blame mode, with each side denying responsibility for initiating the clash.

Mohammad Sadiq, head of Pakistan’s border police, accused Afghan forces of firing the first shots “without any provocation,” insisting Pakistani troops retaliated only in self-defence.

The Taliban administration rejected Pakistan’s account. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid blamed Pakistan for starting the confrontation, while Afghan border police official Abdullah Farooqi alleged that Pakistani troops “threw the first grenade,” leaving Afghan forces with no option but to respond.
“We remain committed to the ceasefire but will stay vigilant,” Farooqi stated.

Ceasefire Agreement on the Verge of Collapse

The encounter comes just two months after both sides agreed to a temporary ceasefire in Qatar, aimed at preventing further bloodshed following earlier deadly clashes. However, the fragile truce now appears to be unraveling.

Analysts point to Pakistan’s growing frustration with the Afghan Taliban’s alleged support for Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants. Pakistan claims the Taliban are harbouring TTP fighters responsible for a surge in attacks since the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul in 2021 — an accusation Afghanistan denies.

Border on High Alert Amid Fears of Wider Conflict

Following the overnight clash, border guards on both sides remained on high alert, communicating via radio as tensions lingered. Security analysts warn that without urgent diplomatic intervention, even a seemingly small skirmish could spiral into a much larger conflict, threatening the stability of the entire South Asian region.
