The E20 petrol debate continues across India as vehicle owners raise concerns over mileage and older engine compatibility. The government is discussing the possible return of E10 petrol alongside E20, though no final decision has been taken yet.

The nationwide debate over E20 petrol has intensified amid concerns from vehicle owners about lower mileage and the compatibility of older engines with higher ethanol-blended fuel. The government is reportedly holding discussions with oil marketing companies over whether E10 petrol could once again be made available alongside E20.

E20 petrol contains 20% ethanol and is currently the standard petrol variant available across the country. India achieved its 20% ethanol-blending target ahead of schedule, following which E20 became the nationwide base fuel.

The move has triggered concerns among owners of older vehicles, particularly those designed to run on E10 petrol. Vehicle owners have claimed that E20 can affect mileage and certain engine components. The government has acknowledged that fuel efficiency in some older vehicles may decline by around 3-5%, while other government statements have put the possible reduction at up to 6%, depending on vehicle type and age.

However, the Centre has maintained that there is no evidence of widespread engine failures caused by E20. Extensive testing by agencies including the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and Indian Oil Corporation has assessed engine durability, fuel-system compatibility, corrosion resistance and performance.

E10 Option Under Discussion

The possibility of making E10 petrol available again has gained attention following remarks by Chief Economic Adviser V. Anantha Nageswaran. He recently advocated offering lower-ethanol fuel alongside E20, particularly for older vehicles. Reuters reported that his suggestion was aimed at giving consumers greater choice during the transition to higher ethanol blends.

However, there is currently no final decision to reintroduce E10 nationwide. Government officials have also pointed to the logistical and infrastructure challenges of maintaining separate E10 and E20 supply chains across the country’s extensive fuel retail network.

Vehicles manufactured from April 2023 onwards are generally designed to comply with E20 fuel requirements, while many older vehicles were designed around E10 compatibility.

Government Highlights E20 Benefits

The government has defended E20 as part of India’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, lower emissions and support domestic ethanol production and farmers.

According to government assessments, E20 can provide environmental benefits compared with lower ethanol blends, while its higher octane rating can also support performance in compatible vehicles.

For now, discussions around E10 remain at an early stage, and motorists will have to wait for any formal decision on whether lower-ethanol petrol will return to fuel stations.
