India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has successfully undergone surgery for a sports hernia in Munich, Germany. The 34-year-old cricketer shared the news via Instagram on Wednesday, allaying fans’ concerns sparked by a recent hospital bed photo he had posted earlier this week.

Instagram Update Confirms Surgery and Recovery

In his latest social media post, Yadav revealed that the surgery targeted a sports hernia located in the lower right abdomen. He stated, “Life Update: Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen. I’m grateful to share that following a smooth surgery, I’m already on the road to recovery.”

Yadav also injected humor into the situation, creating an Instagram poll asking fans whether he should be considered a right-handed or left-handed person moving forward — a playful touch to ease his followers’ worries.

Change in Surgery Location

While Yadav was initially expected to undergo the procedure in the UK after consulting a specialist in London on June 24, there was a last-minute change of plans. According to IndianExpress.com, the surgery was ultimately conducted in Munich, Germany.

Timing of Surgery Aligned with Cricket Schedule

The surgery was strategically timed, as India is currently in a lull in their T20I schedule. Their next white-ball assignment is the tour of Bangladesh in August 2025, which includes three ODIs and three T20Is. India last played a T20I in April, offering Yadav a window to focus on his health without affecting team commitments.

A BCCI official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed: “Surya could do nothing until August for India and hence decided that this is the most appropriate time for him to have the surgery and recuperate at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, from where he will start his rehabilitation process in about two weeks’ time.”

Recent Cricketing Form and Injury History

Yadav had an eventful cricketing season prior to the surgery. He captained the Mumbai Indians to the IPL 2025 title and also led Triumph Knights Mumbai North East in the T20 Mumbai League, scoring 122 runs in five innings.

This is not Yadav’s first brush with injury. He underwent ankle surgery in 2023 and reportedly had another sports hernia procedure in 2024. However, it remains unclear whether the recent Munich operation is related to the 2024 surgery.

A sports hernia, medically referred to as athletic pubalgia, is a soft-tissue injury typically affecting the groin or lower abdominal region. Symptoms often include persistent pain in those areas. While surgery is not always required, recovery from a surgical sports hernia repair can take several weeks to six months. Rehabilitation generally includes physical therapy and core strengthening exercises under professional supervision.
