Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with US Vice President J.D. Vance on Saturday and discussed ways to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

During the conversation, the two leaders discussed cooperation across key areas and explored ways to deepen bilateral ties. The call comes amid continued efforts by India and the United States to expand strategic, economic and diplomatic cooperation.

Prime Minister Modi also congratulated Vice President Vance and his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, on the birth of their son and extended his warm wishes to the entire family.

The conversation took place amid renewed attention on India-US relations following comments by US Congressman Riley Moore regarding proposed amendments to India’s Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). Moore had expressed concerns that the proposed changes could affect churches and religious organisations receiving foreign contributions.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs responded that changes to India’s laws are an internal matter to be handled through the country’s legislative process. The ministry also pointed out that several countries, including the United States, have their own regulations governing foreign funding.

Previous Modi-Vance Call

The latest conversation is also significant as the two leaders’ previous publicly known phone call took place in May 2025, during heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor.

Prime Minister Modi later referred to that conversation in Parliament, stating that he had returned Vance’s call after receiving multiple missed calls from the US Vice President. According to Modi’s account, Vance had conveyed information regarding a possible Pakistani attack on India.

The latest phone call underscores the continued engagement between New Delhi and Washington as both sides seek to further consolidate their strategic partnership.
