Bilateral Trade Discussions to Continue

Trade negotiations between India and the United States are expected to move forward with the visit of an American delegation to India next month. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that discussions between the two countries on a proposed trade agreement will continue in the coming weeks.

The development comes after an Indian delegation visited the United States in April this year to discuss multiple aspects of a bilateral trade arrangement. Officials from both sides reportedly held detailed talks on tariffs, market access, and economic cooperation.

US Foreign Secretary to Visit India

Adding momentum to the diplomatic engagement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit India on May 23. This will be Rubio’s first official visit to the country since assuming office.

During the visit, both nations are expected to discuss trade relations, defence cooperation, and energy partnerships. India and the United States had earlier set a target of increasing bilateral trade to 500 billion dollars by 2030, a goal that was agreed upon last year.

Tariff Dispute Had Strained Relations

Trade relations between the two countries had witnessed tension after US President Donald Trump imposed reciprocal tariffs on several countries, including India, in April last year.

The US administration had also imposed an additional 25 percent penalty on India over its oil purchases from Russia. As a result, American tariffs on Indian goods reportedly increased to nearly 50 percent.

The move was viewed by many as an attempt to pressure India into accepting trade conditions favourable to Washington. However, India maintained a firm position during the negotiations and did not yield to external pressure.

Fresh Push for Trade Agreement

After months of uncertainty, both countries eventually resumed dialogue. Reports suggest that the Trump administration later showed willingness to restart negotiations, leading to fresh diplomatic engagement between the two sides.

In February this year, India and the United States announced progress toward an interim understanding on trade-related issues. However, before a final agreement could be reached, the US Supreme Court reportedly declared the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration invalid.

That ruling temporarily reduced the relevance of earlier negotiations, leading to a brief pause in discussions. Now, after a period of silence, both countries have once again restarted talks aimed at achieving a broader trade agreement.

Focus on Long-Term Economic Cooperation

Experts believe the renewed negotiations indicate that both India and the United States remain committed to strengthening long-term economic ties despite past disagreements.

With high-level diplomatic visits planned and trade discussions back on track, both nations are expected to focus on building a more stable and mutually beneficial economic partnership in the coming years.

Possible High-Level Meeting Between India and US Leaders

Meetings between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump have always attracted global attention. After their important bilateral meeting at the White House in February last year, the two leaders have not met at any major international summit.

However, both leaders are now expected to come face-to-face during the upcoming G7 Summit scheduled to be held in France in June.

G7 Summit to be Held in France

India is not a permanent member of the G7 group, but it has regularly participated in the summit as a special invitee nation.

French President Emmanuel Macron has invited Prime Minister Modi to attend this year’s G7 Summit, which will be held from June 15 to 17 at Évian-les-Bains in France.

Diplomatic observers believe that considering Trump’s unpredictable political style, the possibility of a separate bilateral meeting between Modi and Trump during the summit cannot be ruled out.

Trade Disputes May Dominate Discussions

The possible Modi-Trump meeting comes at a time when trade-related tensions between India and the United States continue to remain a major issue.

After beginning his second term as US President, Trump hosted Prime Minister Modi at the White House in February 2025. Modi was among the first global leaders to visit Washington after Trump’s return to office.

Despite tariff-related disagreements, Trump had described Modi as a “great friend,” and both leaders had pledged to double India-US trade to 500 billion dollars by 2030.

India Rejects Trump’s Mediation Claims

Relations between the two countries witnessed fresh debate after tensions between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor earlier this year.

President Trump repeatedly claimed that he had helped stop a possible conflict between India and Pakistan, reportedly hoping such diplomatic efforts would strengthen his chances for the Nobel Peace Prize.

However, the Indian government firmly rejected any suggestion of third-party mediation, maintaining that issues between India and Pakistan remain strictly bilateral.

Modi Maintains Strategic Silence

Even as the United States increased tariff pressure on India, Prime Minister Modi largely maintained silence and avoided directly responding to Trump’s remarks and threats.

Reports also suggest that Modi skipped certain global engagements, including events in Sharm El-Sheikh and the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, partly to avoid an uncomfortable diplomatic situation involving Trump.

Global Attention on Upcoming Summit

With growing geopolitical tensions and ongoing trade disputes, the upcoming G7 Summit in France is expected to attract significant international attention.

A possible Modi-Trump meeting could become one of the key highlights of the summit, especially amid evolving India-US strategic and economic relations.
