The cultural capital of western Odisha, Sambalpur, has transformed into a vibrant hub of devotion and festivity as the famous Sital Sasthi festival unfolds with great religious fervour. Thousands of devotees and visitors from across the country have gathered to witness the celestial wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, one of the region’s most celebrated religious events.

Divine Wedding Ceremony Draws Massive Crowds

The city witnessed an atmosphere of deep devotion as Lord Shiva, adorned in magnificent bridal attire, set out as the groom for his symbolic marriage to Goddess Parvati. During the auspicious hours of Thursday night and early Friday morning, the sacred wedding rituals were performed amid chanting of hymns and traditional ceremonies.

The symbolic parents of Goddess Parvati became emotional while performing the Kanyadaan (giving away the bride), a key ritual in the divine wedding ceremony. Devotees from distant places thronged Sambalpur to witness the unique and spiritually significant event.

Traditional Rituals Mark the Celebrations

Earlier on Thursday, the traditional Gainthala Fita ritual was conducted on the occasion of Jyestha Shukla Panchami. The symbolic parents from the previous year participated in the ceremony before Goddess Parvati returned to her temple.

At the bride’s residence, rituals such as Tailabhishek and Haladi Khela were performed, while at the Shiva temple, Lord Shiva was decorated with ornaments and special attire befitting a groom.

Grand Baraat Procession Enthrals Spectators

Following the Maha Aarti at night, Lord Shiva commenced the grand wedding procession accompanied by symbolic representations of Yakshas, Gandharvas and Kinnaras, along with thousands of devotees.

The procession began from Balunkeswar Temple at Nandapada and passed through Mahantipada, Kansaripada, Baidyanath Chowk, Shakti Sangha Chowk and Municipality Chowk before reaching Nari Seva Sadan, the designated venue for the wedding ceremony.

The symbolic parents of Goddess Parvati, Pradeep Mishra and Binapani Mishra of Sambalpur Sasan, along with their family members, extended a grand welcome to the groom’s procession.

Cultural Extravaganza Adds Colour to the Festival

The spectacular procession featured a rich blend of folk and traditional performances from different parts of India. Attractions included Dulduli, Samparda, Ujjain’s Dambaru performers, traditional bells, Andhra Pradesh’s Kantara dance, Kerala band performances, Mayurbhanj’s Kalasa dance, Haryana’s Aghori-themed acts, Kharagpur’s Tiger Dance and traditional Akhara performances from Punjab.

Adding spiritual significance to the event, Lord Sakshi Gopinath also joined the procession aboard a beautifully decorated ceremonial chariot, symbolically witnessing the divine wedding.

Sital Sasthi continues to be one of Odisha’s most unique festivals, blending devotion, culture and community participation. The grand celebration not only attracts thousands of pilgrims every year but also showcases Sambalpur’s rich cultural heritage and traditions, making it a major spiritual and cultural attraction in the state.
