The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is being celebrated from January 8th to 10th, 2025, in Bhubaneswar, the culturally rich capital of Odisha. This significant occasion brings together the Indian diaspora to honor their contributions and reconnect with their heritage, while also fostering collaborations in business, innovation, and cultural exchange.

Reconnecting with Our Past

The story of Indian Indentured Labourers forms a poignant chapter in our history. After the abolition of slavery in 1834, thousands left India to work in colonies such as Mauritius, South Africa, Fiji, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, and others. Among these, Mauritius holds special significance with over 300 delegates attending PBD 2025.

The indenture system began officially on November 2, 1834, when 36 workers landed in Mauritius. This date, now celebrated as Aapravasi Divas, marks the start of a migration that saw over 450,000 Indians make Mauritius their new home. Among them, 3,116 hailed from Odisha, although their descendants have lost much of their cultural ties.

Shri Ramrup Jagannath, a descendant of Odia ancestry from Jajpur, dreams of reviving these connections. He leads the Odia Anusthana, an organization that unites Mauritians of Odia descent to preserve their lost traditions and rebuild cultural ties. Shri Jagannath appeals to the Odisha government to support initiatives like building a Jagannath Mandira and fostering stronger connections between Mauritius and Odisha.
