A video allegedly recorded inside the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri has gone viral on social media, once again raising concerns over the enforcement of the temple’s ban on mobile phones.

According to reports, a devotee is believed to have carried a mobile phone into the temple premises and recorded a video from the Pata Agana area before uploading it to Instagram. The incident has sparked criticism, as carrying and using mobile phones inside the temple is strictly prohibited.

The viral video has renewed questions about how mobile phones continue to find their way into the shrine despite repeated restrictions imposed by the temple administration.

Devotees have demanded strict action against those responsible for violating the temple rules. At the same time, concerns have also been raised over the role of temple staff and security personnel, with calls for stronger measures to prevent the unauthorized entry of mobile phones into the temple premises.

This is not the first time visuals from inside the 12th-century shrine have surfaced online. In the past, photographs and videos from areas such as the Baishi Pahacha (22 steps), Ananda Bazaar, Mahalaxmi Temple, and other restricted sections of the temple have circulated on social media, leading to complaints and police cases.

The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has previously issued strict guidelines prohibiting devotees from carrying mobile phones inside the temple. Despite these measures, repeated incidents of unauthorized photography and videography have highlighted concerns over the effectiveness of the existing security arrangements.

The latest incident has once again hurt the sentiments of many devotees, who have urged the temple administration to strengthen security protocols and ensure strict enforcement of the ban on mobile phones inside the sacred shrine.

The sacred Banakalagi ritual, one of the most significant and secretive traditions of the Shree Jagannath Temple, will be performed on Ashadha Shukla Tithi today. As part of the ritual, public darshan will remain suspended from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

According to the temple administration, the Banakalagi ritual will begin after the completion of the second Bhogamandap offering. The ceremony is carried out exclusively by the Dutta Mahapatra servitors, who ascend the Ratna Singhasan to adorn the divine faces of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra.

As the ritual is considered a confidential temple tradition, devotees are not allowed inside the temple during its performance. After the Banakalagi ritual concludes, the deities will undergo the Maha Snana (holy bathing) ritual, following which the remaining daily rituals will continue and public darshan will resume.

Banakalagi is regarded as one of the most important rituals in the Jagannath Temple’s centuries-old tradition. During the ceremony, the faces of the deities are carefully decorated using natural colours such as Hingula (cinnabar), Haritala (orpiment), black, white, and other traditional pigments. The intricate facial decoration enhances the divine appearance of the deities and reflects the rich artistic and spiritual heritage of the Jagannath tradition.

The ritual also marks the continuation of temple ceremonies following the deities’ return to the sanctum during Niladri Bije earlier this week. After remaining vacant for 27 days during the Rath Yatra festivities, the Ratna Singhasan was reoccupied by the sibling deities on Monday.

On Tuesday, devotees were offered Nilachala Abadha, the first rice Mahaprasad prepared after the deities returned to the temple. Temple servitors say devotees eagerly wait throughout the year to receive this sacred Mahaprasad, which is considered highly auspicious. Due to the lengthy rituals associated with Niladri Bije, the preparation and distribution of Nilachala Abadha traditionally begin the following day.

The Banakalagi ritual remains one of the most revered expressions of the Jagannath Temple’s unique spiritual traditions, drawing deep devotion and reverence from thousands of devotees every year.

Lakhs of devotees thronged the Bada Danda (Grand Road) to witness the Holy Trinity leave the sanctum of the Jagannath Temple and proceed towards their majestic chariots.

The procession began with Lord Balabhadra, followed by Goddess Subhadra, while Lord Jagannath emerged last from the Ratna Singhasana.
As Lord Jagannath moved gracefully in the traditional swaying style of Pahandi, adorned with the iconic Tahia headgear, devotees erupted in joy. Despite intermittent rain and heavy crowds, thousands patiently waited for a glimpse of the Lord, believing that witnessing the Pahandi brings immense spiritual blessings.

Temple servitors carefully escorted the deities towards their respective chariots, with Lord Jagannath making his way to the Nandighosa chariot. The ceremonial procession, accompanied by traditional music and devotional performances, transformed the Grand Road into a sea of humanity.

For devotees, Rath Yatra is more than a religious festival—it is a rare occasion when the Lord steps out of the temple to bless everyone, irrespective of caste, creed, or social status. Many devotees were seen praying with folded hands, while others struggled through the crowd for a closer view or to touch the sacred chariot ropes.

The emotional atmosphere was marked by tears of devotion, chants of faith, and an overwhelming sense of spiritual unity. As the Holy Trinity reached their chariots, the sacred spectacle once again reaffirmed Rath Yatra’s status as one of the world’s largest and most cherished religious festivals, drawing millions of devotees to the abode of Lord Jagannath.

The rituals continue with Rosha Homa, Surya Puja, and Dwarapala Puja. Water is ceremonially sprinkled inside the sanctum, while temple servitors carry out traditional rituals associated with the deities. The Sakala Dhupa offering is then made with Khechudi, Pitha, Takua, and other sacred food preparations, which are offered through the traditional Shodasha Upachara rituals.

Continuous Worship During the Deities’ Journey

From the moment the deities leave the Ratna Singhasana (jeweled throne) until they return after the nine-day festival, temple worship continues without interruption.

Senior temple servitors perform Mangalarpana before the deities. Ritual offerings are arranged in brass vessels, while floral offerings and sacred cotton threads are prepared for the ceremonial adornment of the Lords. Nine special Tuli (sacred cotton wicks), traditionally supplied by Raghav Das Math, are used during the rituals.

Meanwhile, the Daitapati servitors untie the ceremonial bindings of the deities, marking the beginning of their journey outside the sanctum.

Before the commencement of the Pahandi Bije, the Natamandap and Jagamohan are cleared and purified. Entry is restricted to only authorized temple servitors, officials on duty, and temple police personnel. No dignitaries or unauthorized persons are permitted inside the temple premises during this crucial phase of the rituals.

As each deity reaches the Baishi Pahacha, they are adorned with the beautifully crafted Tahia, a traditional floral headgear presented by Raghav Das Math.

The air resonates with chants of “Hari Bol”, “Jai Jagannath”, and the traditional Hulhuli sounds, creating an atmosphere of unparalleled spiritual fervour.

Scheduled to be observed on 29 June 2026, this grand ceremonial bathing festival heralds the beginning of the annual journey leading to the world-famous Ratha Yatra.

Observed on the full moon day (Purnima) of the month of Jyeshtha, Snana Jatra is the only occasion in the year when the deities—Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Sudarshana—are brought out from the sanctum sanctorum and presented before devotees in a public ceremony. The event attracts lakhs of pilgrims and visitors from across India and abroad who gather to witness this unique manifestation of divine grace.

The Ritual of the Sacred Bath

The celebrations commence with the ceremonial procession known as Pahandi Bije, during which the deities are escorted from the sanctum to the Snana Mandap (bathing platform) amidst the resonating sounds of bells, conches, cymbals, and devotional chants.

At the Snana Mandap, the deities are bathed with 108 pitchers of sanctified water, drawn from the sacred Suna Kua (Golden Well) within the temple premises. The elaborate ritual symbolizes purification, devotion, and the benevolence of the divine towards humanity.

The sacred bathing ceremony is performed according to age-old traditions and Vedic rites, reflecting the rich spiritual heritage of Odisha and the enduring cultural legacy of the Jagannath tradition.

Hati Besha: The Majestic Elephant Attire

One of the most anticipated highlights of Snana Jatra is the Hati Besha (Elephant Attire), in which Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra are adorned with elephant-like decorations. This unique attire is believed to commemorate the devotion of a Ganapati worshipper and symbolizes the universality of the Jagannath cult, which embraces diverse faith traditions and spiritual expressions.

The sight of the deities in Hati Besha captivates devotees and visitors alike, offering a rare and memorable spiritual experience.

Anasara: The Divine Recuperation

Following the ceremonial bath, tradition holds that the deities develop a fever due to the extensive bathing ritual. Consequently, they retire from public view for a fortnight in a period known as Anasara. During this time, the deities are believed to undergo recuperation and are attended to by traditional temple servitors.

Devotees eagerly await the conclusion of Anasara and the subsequent Nabajouban Darshan, when the rejuvenated deities reappear before the public, radiating renewed divine splendour shortly before Ratha Yatra.

Spiritual and Cultural Significance

Deba Snana Purnima embodies the essence of devotion, equality, and inclusiveness that characterizes the Jagannath tradition. The festival offers devotees an opportunity to witness the deities in a rare public appearance and seek their blessings for peace, prosperity, and spiritual well-being.

Beyond its religious significance, Snana Jatra serves as a vibrant celebration of Odisha’s cultural heritage, showcasing centuries-old rituals, traditional music, temple customs, and collective devotion. The festival also marks the formal commencement of the annual festivities culminating in the grand Ratha Yatra, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

Preparations for Snana Jatra 2026

With lakhs of devotees expected to converge in Puri on 29 June 2026, extensive arrangements are being made by the administration, temple authorities, and law-enforcement agencies to ensure the smooth and peaceful conduct of the festival. Special emphasis is being placed on crowd management, traffic regulation, security deployment, emergency response mechanisms, and pilgrim facilitation services.

As Puri prepares to welcome devotees from every corner of the globe, Deba Snana Purnima 2026 stands as a timeless reminder of faith, tradition, and the enduring spiritual magnetism of Lord Jagannath—a celebration where divinity comes closer to humanity through ritual, devotion, and collective reverence.
