Rasagola Divas Celebrated Across Odisha as State Honours Its Iconic GI-Tagged Sweet

Odisha on Monday celebrated Rasagola Divas with religious fervour and cultural pride on the occasion of Niladri Bije, the concluding ritual of the annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath. The day commemorates the centuries-old tradition in which Lord Jagannath offers Rasagola to Goddess Lakshmi to appease her before re-entering the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri.

Regarded as the “king of sweets,” Rasagola holds a special place in Odia culture and the Jagannath tradition. According to several Odia researchers, the sweet has been associated with the temple rituals since the 12th century. The belief that Lord Jagannath presents Rasagola to Goddess Lakshmi during Niladri Bije has made the delicacy an integral part of Odisha’s religious heritage.

To mark the occasion, internationally acclaimed sand artist and Padma Shri awardee Sudarshan Pattnaik created a seven-foot-tall sand sculpture on Puri beach depicting Lord Jagannath and Goddess Lakshmi along with the message, “Happy Rasagola Divas.” The artwork attracted devotees and tourists, adding to the festive atmosphere surrounding the celebrations.

The observance of Rasagola Divas began as a social media campaign on July 30, 2015, coinciding with Niladri Bije, and has been officially celebrated every year since 2016. The initiative also aimed to promote Odisha’s traditional Rasagola globally and highlight its unique cultural and historical significance.

The celebration gained greater importance after Odisha secured the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for “Odisha Rasagola” on July 29, 2019, ending a long-standing dispute over the sweet’s origin. The GI recognition established Odisha Rasagola as a distinct traditional product with deep roots in the state’s culinary and religious traditions.

The Odisha Government has also intensified efforts to preserve and promote the iconic sweet. Following the GI recognition, the state has focused on branding “Odisha Rasagola” and strengthening its market presence. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Pahala Rasagola Cluster has been approved by the MSME Department, paving the way for the establishment of a modern Common Facility Centre (CFC).

The government has allotted around 1.5 acres of land at Pahala for the project, which aims to organise sweet makers, improve production standards through modern technology and expand the reach of Odisha Rasagola to national and international markets. Officials believe the cluster will enhance employment opportunities for traditional sweet makers while preserving one of Odisha’s most cherished culinary legacies.

Puri Gears Up for Suna Besha as Lord Jagannath Adorns Golden Attire Today

The holy town of Puri is set to witness one of the most spectacular rituals of the annual Rath Yatra as Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra will be adorned in the magnificent Suna Besha (Golden Attire) on Saturday. Millions of devotees are expected to gather along the Grand Road (Bada Danda) to witness the deities in their dazzling golden ornaments atop their chariots.

Observed on Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi, the Suna Besha is performed while the deities remain seated on their respective chariots near the Singhadwara of the Jagannath Temple after the Bahuda Yatra.

As per temple tradition, the Bhitarchha Mahapatra servitor adorns Lord Jagannath with the golden ornaments, the Talichha Mahapatra decorates Lord Balabhadra, while the Pushpalaka servitor performs the adornment of Devi Subhadra.

According to the special ritual schedule, the Suna Besha will begin at 5:00 PM and continue until 11:00 PM, after which the ornaments will be ceremonially removed. If the temple rituals conclude ahead of schedule, devotees may get an opportunity to witness the divine attire from the afternoon itself.

To ensure smooth crowd management, authorities have made elaborate barricading arrangements along the Bada Danda. Devotees will enter from the left side of the Grand Road, have darshan in front of the three chariots, and exit through the right side.

Rukmini Haran and Wedding Rituals to Be Held at Srimandir; Darshan to Remain Closed for Five Hours

The sacred rituals of Rukmini Haran and Rukmini Bibaha (wedding ceremony) will be observed at the world-famous Srimandir in Puri on Thursday on the occasion of Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi.

According to the Srimandir administration, public darshan will remain suspended from around 1 PM to 6 PM after the completion of the first Bhogamandap Bhoga ritual. Devotees will again be allowed to have darshan after 6 PM.

The Rukmini Haran ritual is based on an important episode from Hindu mythology. According to ancient scriptures, during the Dwapara Yuga, King Bhishmaka ruled the kingdom of Vidarbha. He had five sons and one daughter, Rukmini, who was known for her beauty, wisdom, and devotion.

Although Rukmini and Lord Krishna wished to marry each other, her elder brother Rukmi wanted her to marry King Shishupala of Chedi. When Rukmini came to know about this decision, she wrote a letter to Lord Krishna seeking his help.

After receiving the message, Lord Krishna arrived and rescued Rukmini by taking her away. A battle followed between Krishna and Shishupala, who had come for the marriage. Krishna defeated Shishupala and later married Rukmini on the same night.

Mythological Story Recreated Through Temple Ritual

The legendary episode is recreated every year at Srimandir as part of the temple’s traditional rituals. During the ceremony, Lord Jagannath’s representative deity, Madanmohan, participates in the ritual dressed in a special war attire, symbolising the battle fought by Lord Krishna.

The annual observance attracts devotees who witness the traditional presentation of one of the most significant episodes associated with Lord Krishna and Goddess Rukmini.

Deba Snana Purnima 2026: The Sacred Bathing Festival of Lord Jagannath

Dr.Satyajit Naik,IPS : Deba Snana Purnima, popularly known as Snana Jatra, marks one of the most significant and spiritually uplifting festivals in the annual ritual calendar of Shri Jagannath Temple. Scheduled to be observed on 29 June 2026, this grand ceremonial bathing festival heralds the beginning of the annual journey leading to the world-famous Ratha Yatra.

Observed on the full moon day (Purnima) of the month of Jyeshtha, Snana Jatra is the only occasion in the year when the deities—Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Sudarshana—are brought out from the sanctum sanctorum and presented before devotees in a public ceremony. The event attracts lakhs of pilgrims and visitors from across India and abroad who gather to witness this unique manifestation of divine grace.

The Ritual of the Sacred Bath

The celebrations commence with the ceremonial procession known as Pahandi Bije, during which the deities are escorted from the sanctum to the Snana Mandap (bathing platform) amidst the resonating sounds of bells, conches, cymbals, and devotional chants.

At the Snana Mandap, the deities are bathed with 108 pitchers of sanctified water, drawn from the sacred Suna Kua (Golden Well) within the temple premises. The elaborate ritual symbolizes purification, devotion, and the benevolence of the divine towards humanity.

The sacred bathing ceremony is performed according to age-old traditions and Vedic rites, reflecting the rich spiritual heritage of Odisha and the enduring cultural legacy of the Jagannath tradition.

Hati Besha: The Majestic Elephant Attire

One of the most anticipated highlights of Snana Jatra is the Hati Besha (Elephant Attire), in which Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra are adorned with elephant-like decorations. This unique attire is believed to commemorate the devotion of a Ganapati worshipper and symbolizes the universality of the Jagannath cult, which embraces diverse faith traditions and spiritual expressions.

The sight of the deities in Hati Besha captivates devotees and visitors alike, offering a rare and memorable spiritual experience.

Anasara: The Divine Recuperation

Following the ceremonial bath, tradition holds that the deities develop a fever due to the extensive bathing ritual. Consequently, they retire from public view for a fortnight in a period known as Anasara. During this time, the deities are believed to undergo recuperation and are attended to by traditional temple servitors.

Devotees eagerly await the conclusion of Anasara and the subsequent Nabajouban Darshan, when the rejuvenated deities reappear before the public, radiating renewed divine splendour shortly before Ratha Yatra.

Deba Snana Purnima embodies the essence of devotion, equality, and inclusiveness that characterizes the Jagannath tradition. The festival offers devotees an opportunity to witness the deities in a rare public appearance and seek their blessings for peace, prosperity, and spiritual well-being.

The festival also marks the formal commencement of the annual festivities culminating in the grand Ratha Yatra, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

Preparations for Snana Jatra 2026

With lakhs of devotees expected to converge in Puri on 29 June 2026, extensive arrangements are being made by the administration, temple authorities, and law-enforcement agencies to ensure the smooth and peaceful conduct of the festival. Special emphasis is being placed on crowd management, traffic regulation, security deployment, emergency response mechanisms, and pilgrim facilitation services.
