In a major development in Odisha’s political landscape, Union Tribal Affairs Minister and senior BJP leader Jual Oram officially announced his retirement from electoral politics on Saturday. Speaking at a public meeting in Sambalpur, the 63-year-old veteran and sitting MP from Sundargarh declared he would no longer contest elections, bringing down the curtain on a political journey spanning over three decades.

“I have contested ten elections—five as an MLA and five as an MP. Now it’s time for the younger generation to take over. I will continue to mentor and support the party,” Oram said, expressing his commitment to guide new leaders and contribute in a non-electoral capacity.

Oram, one of Odisha’s most prominent tribal leaders, has been instrumental in the rise of the BJP in the state. After joining the party in 1989, he made his electoral debut by winning the Bonai Assembly constituency in 1990, serving two terms as MLA. In 1998, he transitioned to national politics and went on to win the Sundargarh Lok Sabha seat six times, including in the last three general elections—2014, 2019, and 2024.

His appointment in 1999 as the first-ever Union Tribal Affairs Minister during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government marked a milestone in India’s tribal policymaking. His contributions in that role laid the groundwork for many welfare schemes that continue under the Narendra Modi-led administration.
