The Hirakud Dam on Wednesday released the season’s first floodwater after the opening of its sluice gates following a traditional ritual. The gates were opened after 11 a.m. in accordance with the dam’s long-standing practice.

As per tradition, Gate No. 7 on the Hirakud side was opened first, followed by the opening of additional gates based on operational requirements. This year, a total of four gates—three on the left spillway and one on the right spillway—have been opened to release 1 lakh cusecs of water.

According to official data, the reservoir’s water level stood at 624.93 feet at 6 a.m. on the day of the release. The dam was receiving an inflow of 1,41,438 cusecs, prompting authorities to initiate controlled floodwater discharge for reservoir management and flood moderation.

Officials said the released water is expected to take 12 to 16 hours to reach Khairmal and Barmul, while it is likely to reach Mundali in 36 to 48 hours. Advance flood alerts have already been issued for downstream areas before the release of water.

The Hirakud reservoir has a dead storage level of 590 feet, while its full reservoir level (FRL) is 630 feet. Authorities stated that the gates are opened primarily to ensure flood control and maintain the structural safety of the dam during the monsoon season.

The Chief Engineer of the Mahanadi Basin has cautioned that water levels in the Mahanadi River and its tributaries downstream are expected to rise due to the discharge. People living along the riverbanks have been advised to avoid entering the river for bathing, fishing, boating, or any other activities until further notice and to strictly follow safety advisories issued by the administration.
