A chilling crime has come to light in Maharashtra, where a 35-year-old recovery agent allegedly murdered an unsuspecting pedestrian and staged his own death in a bid to claim ₹1 crore in insurance money. The gruesome plan, driven by mounting debt and desperation, has left the local community stunned.

A Desperate Plan Takes Shape

Ganesh Chavan, a resident of Latur, was reportedly under severe financial stress and burdened by debt. Investigators say he believed faking his own death was the only way out. His plan hinged on making the incident appear like a fatal road accident, convincing authorities and his family that he had died.

Victim Lured and Killed

On December 13, Chavan allegedly spotted Govind Yadav, a pedestrian who was intoxicated, and offered him a lift. Police say Chavan ensured Yadav lost consciousness during the ride. He then dragged the unconscious man into the driver’s seat of the car.

To reinforce the deception, Chavan left behind his bracelet in the vehicle as a means of identification and set the car on fire before fleeing the scene.

Burnt Body Sparks Initial Misidentification

The following morning, police discovered the charred remains inside the burnt car. With Chavan’s documents and bracelet found at the scene, investigators initially concluded that he had died in a tragic accident.

His family was informed, and mourning rituals began, with relatives believing he had perished.

A Phone Call That Exposed the Truth

Suspicion arose when investigators learned that Chavan had contacted his girlfriend using a new mobile number after the supposed accident. This critical lead prompted police to intensify their probe, using technical surveillance and call data analysis.

Within a day, police tracked Chavan to Sindhudurg, where he was arrested.

Confession and Murder Charges

During interrogation, Chavan reportedly confessed to killing Govind Yadav and staging the crime to claim the insurance payout. He has now been booked on charges of murder and destruction of evidence.

Police are also investigating whether any accomplices were involved in planning or executing the crime.
