Ahead of the Bihar Assembly election results on November 14, the opposition Mahagathbandhan alliance has devised a plan to prevent post-result horse-trading of its MLAs. Led by the RJD, the alliance will move winning legislators to Patna under strict supervision, while smaller allies like Mukesh Sahani’s VIP and the Congress plan to shift their MLAs to West Bengal, Karnataka, and Telangana — all INDIA bloc-ruled states — to ensure unity and prevent defections.

Patna, Nov 12: With the Bihar Assembly election results set to be announced on November 14, the opposition Mahagathbandhan alliance has gone on the defensive — or rather, the offensive — in ensuring its newly elected MLAs remain secure from alleged poaching attempts.

Fearing a repeat of past defections and political upheavals, the alliance, spearheaded by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), has drawn up a comprehensive plan to safeguard its legislators once the results are declared. The move underscores heightened political tension in the state, where even before the final count, backroom strategies are in full swing.

RJD’s Contingency Plan to Secure MLAs in Patna

As the largest party in the alliance, the RJD will take the lead in mobilising and securing its winning candidates. According to sources, Tejashwi Yadav has directed that all victorious RJD MLAs report to Patna immediately after the results to prevent any possible defection attempts.

Party functionaries are reportedly finalising accommodation and logistics arrangements to ensure the legislators stay together under tight supervision until the government formation process concludes.

Smaller Allies Turn to INDIA Bloc States for Support

Among Mahagathbandhan’s smaller partners, Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) chief Mukesh Sahani has outlined an independent safeguard plan. If victorious, he plans to fly his MLAs to West Bengal, a state governed by INDIA bloc ally Mamata Banerjee, to avoid potential horse-trading.

Similarly, the Congress — another key constituent of the alliance — has instructed its observers to accompany successful MLAs to Patna first, after which they may be relocated to Karnataka or Telangana, both Congress-ruled states, if the situation demands.

Congress leadership has also extended this protection arrangement to smaller party MLAs and independents aligned with the opposition bloc, indicating a coordinated approach within the INDIA alliance.

Unprecedented Voter Turnout Fuels Political Speculation

The cautious strategy follows an exceptionally high voter turnout of 67.14% in the second phase of polling — the highest ever in Bihar’s electoral history. Analysts believe the surge in participation could signal a tight contest.

While Prashant Kishor, chief of the Prashant Kishor Party, claims the record turnout reflects support for his outfit, the Mahagathbandhan leadership, particularly Tejashwi Yadav, remains optimistic about forming the next government.

Political History Fuels Apprehension

Bihar’s turbulent political past — marked by frequent alliance breakups and power shifts — has clearly influenced the Mahagathbandhan’s preemptive strategy. The alliance appears determined to prevent any post-result political engineering by rival camps once the final numbers are out.

As the state awaits results with bated breath, both camps — the ruling and the opposition — are reportedly on high alert. With high stakes and a close fight expected, Bihar’s political theatre seems set for yet another dramatic act.

Bihar witnessed a record-breaking 64.66% voter turnout in the first phase of assembly elections — the highest in the state’s history. The massive participation has triggered speculation of a possible RJD-Congress resurgence, recalling earlier high-turnout elections that favoured Lalu Prasad Yadav’s party. With key contenders like Tejashwi Yadav, Samrat Choudhary, and Vijay Kumar Sinha in the fray, the historic polling could reshape Bihar’s political landscape ahead of the November 14 counting.

In a historic first round of assembly elections, Bihar witnessed an unprecedented 64.66 percent voter turnout across 121 constituencies in 18 districts — the highest ever in the state’s electoral history.
This surpasses the previous record of 62.57 percent in 2000, sparking widespread speculation about a potential comeback for the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-Congress alliance, reminiscent of past high-turnout victories.

Political Stakes and Key Contenders

The high participation has set off a political storm, with 1,314 candidates in the fray, including major figures like Tejashwi Yadav, the Mahagathbandhan’s chief ministerial aspirant, and the NDA’s Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, along with several ministers.
As the next round of polling for 122 seats approaches, political parties are intensifying campaigns across Bihar.

Election Commission’s Enthusiasm Amid Controversy

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has expressed satisfaction over the enthusiastic voter turnout, though the process hasn’t been free from controversy.
Debates continue around the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, which opposition parties have condemned as flawed and biased. Despite these challenges, the high turnout signals a renewed public engagement in the democratic process.

History Suggests High Turnout Favors RJD

Historically, Bihar’s voter turnout exceeding 60 percent has often favored Lalu Prasad Yadav’s political lineage.

1990: With 62.04% turnout, Janata Dal under Lalu Yadav won 122 seats, riding on the Mandal wave.

1995: Another 61.79% turnout gave the Janata Dal 167 seats, consolidating Lalu’s power.

2000: RJD, led by Rabri Devi, benefited again with a 62.57% turnout, securing power even after the state’s bifurcation.

In contrast, lower turnouts in later years marked the rise of Nitish Kumar and the NDA’s dominance, with figures between 46% and 57% from 2005 to 2020.

The Return of RJD’s Golden Days?

This massive voter engagement has rejuvenated hopes in the RJD camp, with Tejashwi Yadav reportedly confident of turning the tide.
Many political observers see this as a potential return to the party’s “golden days,” which could challenge Nitish Kumar’s two-decade hold on Bihar’s politics.

However, as the state awaits counting on November 14, the final outcome remains uncertain. The mood on the ground, though, is clear — Bihar’s electorate wants change, accountability, and a government that addresses migration, employment, and governance issues.

The Bihar Assembly elections began with a fiery political duel as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra traded sharp attacks during rival rallies. While Modi praised the NDA’s record of transforming Bihar through development and infrastructure, Priyanka accused the government of presiding over bridge collapses, corruption, and joblessness, setting the tone for an intense electoral battle ahead.

Polling for 121 constituencies marked the beginning of a three-phase electoral battle that has already turned into a fierce confrontation between the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance).

Modi Blames Opposition for ‘Jungle Raj’ and Loot

Addressing a rally in Araria, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-led Mahagathbandhan, accusing it of plunging Bihar into “jungle raj” between 1990 and 2005.

“Not a single bridge was built during that era, and the state was looted in the name of governance,” Modi alleged, evoking memories of lawlessness and economic stagnation during the RJD’s tenure.

The Prime Minister lauded the NDA government under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for what he described as Bihar’s transformation from “chaos to growth.” Highlighting infrastructure and institutional progress, Modi pointed to the establishment of premier institutions like IIT Patna, IIM Bodh Gaya, AIIMS Patna, and AIIMS Darbhanga, claiming they symbolized Bihar’s march toward modernization.

Priyanka Counters with Charges of Collapse and Corruption

In a spirited counterattack during her rally at Motihari, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accused the NDA of “destroying Bihar’s foundations” and dismissed Modi’s claims of progress.

Citing the collapse of 27 bridges in the last three years, Priyanka questioned the government’s claims of development, saying that “Bihar’s infrastructure is literally falling apart.” She further alleged that rampant corruption and poor governance have eroded public trust and accountability.

“Bihar’s youth have been betrayed,” she said, referring to repeated paper leaks that have delayed recruitment processes and crushed the dreams of thousands of aspirants.

Appeal to Bihar’s Historical Pride

Priyanka invoked Bihar’s historic role in India’s freedom struggle, reminding voters of Mahatma Gandhi’s first Satyagraha movement in Champaran. “It was the people of Bihar who inspired Gandhi ji to lead India’s fight for independence. Today, Bihar must again lead the nation — by voting for truth, justice, and development,” she urged.

She called upon the electorate to defend their democratic rights and view the Mahagathbandhan as the true alternative to what she described as the NDA’s governance failures.

A Battle of Narratives

As the campaign intensifies, Bihar finds itself at the crossroads of two competing narratives:

The NDA’s development pitch, centered on infrastructure growth and economic progress.

The opposition’s critique of mismanagement, unemployment, and declining public infrastructure.

With two more phases of polling yet to come, the state’s voters now face a crucial choice — between the NDA’s promise of continuity and the opposition’s call for change.

In a decisive move to end speculation, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reaffirmed that Nitish Kumar remains the NDA’s Chief Ministerial face in Bihar. Dismissing opposition claims of internal rifts, Shah said, “The posts of Chief Minister and Prime Minister are not for sale,” as he predicted over 160 seats for the alliance and accused the RJD-Congress of spreading falsehoods about BJP’s intentions.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has categorically stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) never announced any alternative chief ministerial candidate for Bihar, reaffirming that Nitish Kumar will continue as Chief Minister under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

In an interview with Aaj Tak, Shah said, “Our government has been clear from day one — Nitish Kumar will remain the Chief Minister. There has never been any other name discussed or declared.”

Dismisses Opposition Speculation

Amit Shah’s remarks come amid intense speculation and political whisper campaigns by the Mahagathbandhan, which has claimed that the BJP would “dump” Nitish Kumar after securing power in Bihar. The Home Minister brushed aside such rumours, saying, “The posts of Chief Minister and Prime Minister are not available for purchase. These are not things to be auctioned or negotiated.”

By reasserting his alliance’s commitment to Nitish Kumar, Shah sought to silence internal murmurs and opposition taunts that the BJP might spring a surprise post-election.

Confident of a Landslide Victory

During the interview, Shah exuded confidence about NDA’s prospects, claiming the alliance would secure over 160 seats in the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.

He dismissed demands for a “formal declaration” of the chief ministerial candidate, saying the alliance’s position was already evident. “We have said it time and again — Nitish Kumar is our leader in Bihar. That should end all confusion,” Shah added.

Taking a Jibe at Nitish Kumar’s Critics

The Home Minister also took the opportunity to hit back at critics within and outside the alliance. Referring to JD(U)’s critics and opposition leaders, BJP spokesperson Pankaj Singh quipped, “What Nitish Kumar does in Bihar is the reverse of what Narendra Modi does in Delhi.”

At a recent rally, Shah took aim at both the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress, saying, “Lalu-Rabri want their son as CM, and Sonia ji wants her son to be PM. Neither will happen. Modi ji is in Delhi, Nitish ji is in Patna — both will continue to serve the people.”

Opposition’s Counterattack

The Mahagathbandhan has made the BJP-JD(U) relationship its primary attack line. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, while campaigning in Bihar, alleged that the BJP had made Nitish Kumar “a captive chief minister.”

“He is like a remote-controlled machine. The buttons are in the hands of Modi and Shah,” Rahul said, suggesting that Nitish had surrendered his independence to the BJP leadership.

Meanwhile, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, projected as the Mahagathbandhan’s CM face, accused the NDA of deceiving voters through “a facade of unity.”

Closing the Ranks Before Polling

As the campaign heads into its final stretch, Shah’s statements are seen as a strategic attempt to reunify the NDA base and quell any doubts about leadership clarity.

The BJP’s strong endorsement of Nitish Kumar also comes amid reports of internal dissatisfaction within sections of the JD(U), where some leaders privately felt overshadowed by the saffron party’s dominance.

By publicly reaffirming Kumar’s leadership, Amit Shah appears to be consolidating the alliance’s position against the RJD-Congress narrative of discord.

The Road Ahead

With the NDA projecting stability and the opposition pushing a “remote-control” charge, Bihar’s political battleground is heating up rapidly. As Amit Shah tries to tighten the alliance’s unity, the upcoming election is shaping into a contest between leadership clarity and opposition cynicism — with Nitish Kumar once again at the centre of Bihar’s political storm.
