A major political reform has stirred controversy in Odisha after the state government approved a 3.5-fold salary increase for MLAs and ministers, with the hike applicable retrospectively from June last year. The move has triggered strong reactions from political circles, analysts and the general public.

Massive Jump in Salaries and Allowances

Under the new structure, the monthly salary of an MLA will rise from around ₹1 lakh to ₹3.45 lakh. The Chief Minister’s salary will go up to approximately ₹3.74 lakh per month.

Allowances have also seen steep hikes — the Chief Minister’s car allowance has jumped from ₹17,000 to ₹91,000 per month, with similar increases for other legislators.

Former MLAs will receive higher pensions too, increasing from ₹30,000 to ₹80,000 per month.

Retrospective Hike Raises Eyebrows

The Odisha Legislative Assembly passed the amendments unanimously, but the retrospective nature of the hike has drawn criticism. Opponents argue that many MLAs are already among the wealthiest individuals in the state and question whether awarding arrears for the past year is justified.

Supporters, however, claim the revision was overdue due to rising inflation and higher cost of living, adding that annual reviews will ensure fair compensation in the long run.

MLAs Cite Inflation as Key Reason

During the Zero Hour discussion, members across party lines — including Pramila Mallik (BJD) and Pratap Keshari Deb — stated that inflation had made it increasingly difficult for MLAs to manage within the previous salary structure.

They welcomed the immediate implementation of recommendations from a committee led by BJP MLA Bhaskar Madhei.

With such a substantial pay hike, many believe expectations from MLAs will rise significantly. Supporters say higher salaries should translate into stronger commitment, better constituency work and improved legislative performance.
