Marking one year since its formation, the Odisha State Law Commission has achieved a significant milestone in the state’s legal reform journey. Speaking at the anniversary event, Law, Works and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan highlighted the Commission’s contributions towards modernizing Odisha’s legal framework.

One Year of Legal Reform Progress

The Minister noted that despite decades since independence, several outdated laws continue to exist. He emphasized that recent legislative developments at the national level—such as modern criminal and evidence laws—have set a progressive direction for legal reforms.

Since its establishment, the Odisha State Law Commission has recommended the repeal of 288 obsolete laws and proposed amendments to 8 major legislations, marking a crucial step toward streamlining governance and improving the legal system in the state.

Vision for a Modern and Progressive Odisha

Harichandan stated that these reforms will not only strengthen the legal structure but also contribute to building a developed Odisha, while reinforcing the state’s identity and governance efficiency.

Launch of Annual Report and New Website

On the occasion, the Minister officially released the Annual Report for 2025–26 and inaugurated the Commission’s new website:

He emphasized that the website will enhance transparency, encourage public participation in legal reforms, and accelerate the modernization of state laws. The annual report, he added, reflects the Commission’s commitment and sincere efforts.

Officials Highlight Commission’s Work

Justice Biswanath Rath, Chairperson of the Commission, outlined its formation, functioning, and achievements over the past year.

Principal Secretary of the Law Department, Pabitra Mohan Samal, delivered the welcome address. Other dignitaries present included Commission members Surya Prasad Mishra, Saura Chandra Mohapatra, Professor Lalit Kumar Deb, and Member Secretary Gangadhar Sethi, along with senior officials and staff of the Commission.
