The southwest monsoon has covered more than half of Odisha and is gradually advancing into additional districts of the state. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), weather conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to progress further over the next four to five days.

Monsoon Reaches Several Parts of Odisha

While the southwest monsoon has already touched several districts in northern coastal Odisha, rainfall activity has remained below expectations in many areas. Weather experts believe that the monsoon is currently in a relatively inactive phase but is likely to strengthen in the coming days.

Low-Pressure Area Likely Around June 28

Meteorologists have indicated that a low-pressure area may form over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions around June 28. The system is expected to enhance rainfall activity across Odisha and help the monsoon become more active after a sluggish start.

The anticipated weather system could bring widespread rain to several districts and provide relief from the prevailing heat conditions.

Heatwave Conditions Persist in Western Odisha

Despite the monsoon’s arrival, several districts in western Odisha continue to experience intense heat.

On Wednesday, Boudh recorded the highest temperature in the state at 42.7°C, followed by Jharsuguda at 40.8°C, Sambalpur at 41.5°C, Hirakud at 41.4°C, Bolangir at 40.1°C, Titlagarh at 40°C, and Subarnapur at 40.1°C.

The capital city Bhubaneswar recorded 38.6°C, while Cuttack registered 37.6°C.

Temperature Likely to Fall

The weather department has forecast a gradual drop in temperatures by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the coming days as rainfall activity increases across the state.

Heatwave Warning for Bolangir

The IMD has issued a heatwave warning for Bolangir district for the next 24 hours, urging residents to take precautions against extreme heat conditions.

Thunderstorms and Rain Lash Several Districts

On Wednesday afternoon, several districts including Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bhawanipatna, Koraput, Malkangiri, Daringbadi, Paralakhemundi, and Nabarangpur witnessed thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and rainfall under the influence of Kalbaisakhi (Nor’wester) activity.

Heavy Rain Alert for Three Districts

The weather department has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Rayagada, Koraput, and Gajapati districts during the next 24 hours.

In addition, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are likely to occur in several parts of the state due to continued Kalbaisakhi activity.

Residents Advised to Stay Alert

Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity and follow weather advisories issued by the IMD. With monsoon conditions expected to strengthen by the end of the month, Odisha may witness a significant increase in rainfall in the coming weeks.

However, the Regional Meteorological Centre has indicated the development of a fresh cyclonic circulation over the north Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to bring more rainfall to Odisha in the coming days.

June 29 Forecast: Heavy Rainfall in Interior and Coastal Odisha

Due to the remnants of the current system, Odisha continues to experience overcast skies. On June 29, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in interior districts including Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, and Keonjhar.
Additionally, coastal and southern districts like Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati may witness rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Temporary Reduction in Rain Intensity

While a slight reduction in rainfall intensity is expected on June 29, weather experts caution that this will be short-lived.

New Low-Pressure Area to Intensify Monsoon

A new low-pressure area is likely to develop over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh and West Bengal by June 30. This system is expected to enhance monsoon activity across Odisha.

Heavy Rainfall Predicted From June 30 to July 3

The fresh system will likely lead to heavy rainfall on June 30 and July 1, with the wet spell continuing till July 3. Districts such as Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Jajpur are under alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall. Other affected regions will include Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Sambalpur, and Sundargarh.
