Another low-pressure system is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal, with Odisha expected to witness increased rainfall over the coming days. A cyclonic circulation is currently active over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-North Odisha coast.

The circulation is extending between 3.1 km and 5.8 km above mean sea level. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the region on August 29.

The developing weather system could trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of Odisha. The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued an Orange Warning for Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj for the next 24 hours, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall.

A Yellow Warning has also been issued for 14 districts for heavy rainfall.

Rainfall to Increase From August 29

Rainfall activity is expected to intensify from August 29, with several parts of Odisha likely to receive rain. The wet spell may continue for around seven days, extending up to September 2.

Along the Odisha coast, winds are likely to reach 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, resulting in rough sea conditions. Fishermen have therefore been advised not to venture into the sea on August 30 and 31.

14 Districts Under Yellow Warning

The districts under the Yellow Warning for heavy rainfall are Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Boudh, Subarnapur, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sundargarh and Jharsuguda.

The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph in Ganjam, Gajapati, Khordha, Puri, Nayagarh and Kandhamal districts.

With another weather system developing over the Bay of Bengal, authorities and residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain alert as rainfall activity is expected to increase across the state.

A low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal, triggering widespread rainfall across Odisha. A cyclonic circulation associated with the system is extending southwestwards with height up to around 7.6 km above sea level. The southwest monsoon is also remaining active over the state, increasing the possibility of heavy rainfall in several districts.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue over Odisha for the next 48 hours. The weather system is likely to keep rainfall activity active in the state till August 29. Red, orange and yellow warnings have been issued for different districts.

Red Warning for Five Districts

A red warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for five districts for today. These are Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur.

An orange warning has been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh.

Thunderstorm and Lightning Alert

Several districts may also experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Winds may reach speeds of 40 to 50 kmph during thunderstorms. An orange warning has been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh.

For tomorrow, an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Subarnapur and Boudh. These districts may also witness thunderstorms and lightning, while a yellow warning has been issued for other districts.

Fishermen Advised to Stay Away From Sea

The sea is expected to remain rough until August 24. Fishermen have therefore been advised not to venture into the sea along the Odisha coast during this period.

Meanwhile, Odisha has recorded 1,044.8 mm of rainfall since June 1, which is 26% above normal. Nabarangpur is the only district currently reporting a rainfall deficit.

Odisha may see another spell of heavy rainfall as a fresh low-pressure system is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal even before the impact of the existing system completely subsides.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, a new upper-air cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal by August 19. Under its influence, a low-pressure area may develop over the northwest Bay of Bengal around August 20, raising concerns over another round of rainfall across Odisha.

Meanwhile, the existing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression, triggering heavy rainfall across several parts of the state.

Orange Warning for Four Districts

For today, the weather department has issued an Orange Warning for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur and Bargarh districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall.

A Yellow Warning has been issued for Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Deogarh, Angul, Subarnapur, Boudh, Balangir and Nuapada. Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are likely in these areas.

Rainfall is expected to continue across Odisha until August 17, with isolated heavy rainfall likely at one or two places.

Rough Sea Along Odisha Coast

Coastal Odisha is likely to experience cloudy weather and rain, accompanied by winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph. The sea is expected to remain rough, prompting authorities to advise fishermen against venturing into the sea.

IMD Bhubaneswar Director Dr Manorama Mohanty has warned of flash-flood risks and reduced visibility in northern Odisha due to heavy rainfall. She urged people to remain alert and exercise caution.

Waterlogging Concerns in Northern Odisha

Water Resources Department Chief Engineer Dilip Rout has advised people to remain cautious around the Jalaka, Salandi and Baitarani rivers.

Heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas has affected water discharge. Although a major flood situation is not expected at present, waterlogging may continue in several areas, including Tihidi, Chandbali, Balasore Sadar, Basta and Dasarathpur.

100 mm Plus Rainfall at 17 Locations

According to the available data, more than 100 mm of rainfall has been recorded at 17 locations across the state.

No major flood situation has been reported in the Budhabalanga, Brahmani, Subarnarekha, Baitarani or Mahanadi rivers so far.

The Hirakud reservoir water level has fallen to around 614 feet. Four gates were closed in the morning, while two gates remain open.

With heavy rainfall continuing in northern Odisha and another low-pressure system potentially developing around August 20, authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

A low-pressure area is likely to form over the Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours, keeping Odisha under the influence of widespread rain and thunderstorms, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said.

According to the IMD, the monsoon trough remains active and extends from Ganganagar through Gwalior, Jamshedpur and Digha to the east-central Bay of Bengal. In addition, an upper-air cyclonic circulation persists over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh at around 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting southward with height. These weather systems are expected to strengthen rainfall activity across the state.

The IMD has issued a Red Warning for Odisha on Friday, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of the state. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds of 30 to 40 kmph are also likely during the period.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Bhubaneswar, has warned that sea conditions will remain rough on August 7 and 8, with wind speeds along the coast likely to reach 40 to 50 kmph. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea for the next two days.

For Friday, Mayurbhanj district has been placed under a Red Alert for extremely heavy rainfall. An Orange Warning has been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Angul, Boudh, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Gajapati, and Ganjam districts, where heavy rainfall is expected.

The weather office has further forecast that heavy rain and thunderstorm activity are likely to continue across Odisha until August 12, under the influence of the evolving weather systems over the Bay of Bengal. The maximum daytime temperature across the state is expected to remain around 33 degrees Celsius over the next 24 hours.

Authorities have advised residents to remain alert, avoid waterlogged areas, and follow official weather advisories as the rainfall intensity is expected to remain high over the coming days.
