Odisha on Monday celebrated Rasagola Divas with religious fervour and cultural pride on the occasion of Niladri Bije, the concluding ritual of the annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath. The day commemorates the centuries-old tradition in which Lord Jagannath offers Rasagola to Goddess Lakshmi to appease her before re-entering the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri.

Regarded as the “king of sweets,” Rasagola holds a special place in Odia culture and the Jagannath tradition. According to several Odia researchers, the sweet has been associated with the temple rituals since the 12th century. The belief that Lord Jagannath presents Rasagola to Goddess Lakshmi during Niladri Bije has made the delicacy an integral part of Odisha’s religious heritage.

To mark the occasion, internationally acclaimed sand artist and Padma Shri awardee Sudarshan Pattnaik created a seven-foot-tall sand sculpture on Puri beach depicting Lord Jagannath and Goddess Lakshmi along with the message, “Happy Rasagola Divas.” The artwork attracted devotees and tourists, adding to the festive atmosphere surrounding the celebrations.

The observance of Rasagola Divas began as a social media campaign on July 30, 2015, coinciding with Niladri Bije, and has been officially celebrated every year since 2016. The initiative also aimed to promote Odisha’s traditional Rasagola globally and highlight its unique cultural and historical significance.

The celebration gained greater importance after Odisha secured the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for “Odisha Rasagola” on July 29, 2019, ending a long-standing dispute over the sweet’s origin. The GI recognition established Odisha Rasagola as a distinct traditional product with deep roots in the state’s culinary and religious traditions.

The Odisha Government has also intensified efforts to preserve and promote the iconic sweet. Following the GI recognition, the state has focused on branding “Odisha Rasagola” and strengthening its market presence. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Pahala Rasagola Cluster has been approved by the MSME Department, paving the way for the establishment of a modern Common Facility Centre (CFC).

The government has allotted around 1.5 acres of land at Pahala for the project, which aims to organise sweet makers, improve production standards through modern technology and expand the reach of Odisha Rasagola to national and international markets. Officials believe the cluster will enhance employment opportunities for traditional sweet makers while preserving one of Odisha’s most cherished culinary legacies.
