The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar has issued a warning of a severe cold wave across Odisha starting December 25, Christmas Day. According to the IMD, the intensity of the cold is expected to increase due to additional north and west winds combined with a western disturbance moving away from the region.

Drop in Night Temperatures and Dense Fog

The entire state will witness a further decline in night temperatures. Thick fog is expected in many areas, significantly reducing visibility and affecting road transport. Isolated regions may experience dense fog severe enough to trigger official warnings during the first two days of the cold wave.

Koraput Records Coldest Temperature

Koraput district recorded the coldest temperature of the season, 5.5°C, on December 22. Visibility in the area dropped below 20 metres due to dense fog, causing major traffic disruptions. Residents were forced to stay indoors or use fires to keep warm. Hilly areas such as Semiliguda and Potangi are expected to face the most serious conditions.

Precautionary Measures Advised

The IMD has urged citizens, especially elderly people and children, to keep themselves warm. While no significant rainfall is expected, the cold wave is likely to persist for several days. Rising humidity in lower air layers may make the existing fog even denser, further affecting transport and daily life.

Residents are advised to take all necessary precautions and remain updated on local weather advisories to stay safe during the extended cold spell.
