The standoff between India’s opposition parties and the Election Commission escalated sharply on Monday, with the INDIA alliance weighing an unprecedented impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The move follows allegations of bias and irregularities raised by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and echoed by several alliance partners.

INDIA Alliance Pushes for Impeachment

During a high-stakes meeting, Kharge proposed the extraordinary step of impeaching the CEC, signalling growing mistrust in the poll body’s neutrality. The suggestion drew wide backing from opposition leaders, who accused the Commission of partisanship and favouring the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi criticised the CEC for “undermining the dignity” of his office by not holding the BJP accountable with equal scrutiny.

EC Defends Its Credibility

On Sunday, Election Commission Secretary Sunder Kumar held a combative press conference, dismissing opposition claims as “baseless.” He insisted that the institution treats ruling and opposition parties alike and urged critics to submit evidence within seven days. “If any glitch exists, share proof and we’ll fix it – mere talk won’t suffice,” Kumar asserted, warning political outfits against using the EC for partisan agendas.

Rahul Gandhi Renews Attack

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi intensified the criticism, accusing the Commission of complicity in electoral fraud during the Karnataka polls and raising red flags over voter list manipulation in Bihar. The opposition’s concerns were further amplified by a Supreme Court directive requiring the disclosure of 65 lakh names removed under the Bihar Special Summary Revision (SSR), which many INDIA bloc leaders cite as proof of malpractice.

Opposition Prepares for Escalation

Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain declared that the INDIA alliance is prepared to use “every democratic tool” available, including impeachment if necessary. “We are ready for anything,” he said, reflecting the bloc’s combative mood. Analysts, however, point out that securing a two-thirds majority in Parliament for impeachment would be an uphill battle.

Battle Over Electoral Integrity

The row underscores India’s increasingly polarised electoral landscape, with the opposition alleging voter list rigging, delayed responses to complaints, and systemic bias in favour of the BJP. While the Election Commission stands firm on demanding evidence over rhetoric, the INDIA bloc continues to escalate pressure, setting the stage for a prolonged political confrontation ahead of upcoming elections.
