1. Odisha on Alert Amid Rise in Asian Covid Cases
Odisha is on alert after the rise in Covid-19 cases in parts of Asia, including Hong Kong and Singapore. The state health administration is closely observing the situation and has initiated discussions with the World Health Organization for risk assessment and preparedness. Director of Public Health, Dr. Nilakant Mishra, stated that there is currently no information about a new Covid variant. No special alert has been issued in India yet, but the state is in contact with the Centre and will act as per Central Government guidelines.

2. EOS-09 Satellite Launch Faces Setback
The launch of the EOS-09 satellite failed due to an obstacle in the third stage. Experts are analyzing the issue. The satellite, launched at 5:59 am from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, was intended to monitor borders and coastlines, particularly sensitive areas. However, due to the third-stage flaw, the mission was not fully successful.

3. India-Pakistan Ceasefire Talks Underway
A ceasefire is being considered between India and Pakistan, with a DGMO-level meeting expected today. The meeting may decide to extend the ceasefire period. Following the Pahalgam attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terrorist camps in POK and Pakistan. Power lines were destroyed in several areas. In Laurel County, Kentucky, search operations continue to locate survivors, according to Sheriff John Root’s office.

9. Thunderstorms Predicted in 9 Odisha Districts
Thunderstorms and high-speed winds are affecting various parts of Odisha. The weather department has predicted thunderstorms today in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Balangir, Koraput, Rayagada, and Gajapati. Wind speeds may reach 30–40 km/h, with an orange warning issued for winds up to 50–60 km/h during Kalabaisakhi.

“Each and Every bone of my body is secular.” This is what Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said when he severed ties with the BJP before the elections in 2009.

Patnaik said he was forced to break the BJD’s alliance with the BJP because he was pained by the anti-Christian riots in Kandhamal in 2008, which were supposedly engineered by the RSS and the BJP. After the 2009 elections, the BJD emerged stronger and the BJP bit the dust.

But after 2019, the BJP consolidated its position and became the main opposition of the state. Interestingly, though the BJD faced challenges from the BJP in the state, it never opposed the BJP at the national level. Rather, it supported all important bills brought by the BJP in Parliament.

Now just before the 2024 elections, there are strong speculations about the BJD going for an alliance with the BJP. If that becomes true what will happen to the “secular bones” of Patnaik?

During the Kandhamal riots, many people went through untold miseries. More than 35 people were killed and hundreds became homeless. Will they forget about what happened to them? Will they trust the BJD and Patnaik?

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha member from Bhubaneswar, Aparajita Sarangi, on Sunday pooh-poohed the “transparent governance” claim by Odisha’s ruling Janata Dal (BJD) and corruption and nepotism had become hallmarks of the present dispensation.

Leading a massive rally at Deras near here to protest against alleged land grab “patronage” by the BJD government, she said the land encroachment at the place by an influential lady spoke volumes about the irregularities committed with the very tacit support of the state government.

“The Odisha government’s claim of clean and transparent governance is a hollow slogan. It is clearly proved in the present case. Here, the land of poor farmers had been handed over to a powerful non-Odia lady for some obvious reasons,” she said, adding Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik was not performing his Raj Dharma.

Ms. Sarangi said more than 150 acres of land were encroached near Deras dam and the irrigation canal lying in the encroached land had been buried. As a result, the farmers of the area were deprived of getting even a drop of water for the last two years, she alleged.

“In the past few months, I had written two letters to the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to unblock encroachment from 150 acres of land near Deras dam. However, I did not get any reply. I believe he might not have read the letters. I also wrote letters to Khurda district administrations in this regard, but didn’t get any reply as well. However, when I wrote letter to the top engineers of the water resources department, the encroachment was removed and the canal was restored,” said Sarangi while addressing a meeting after the rally.

She alleged that a non-Odia lady with the patronage of the state government had grabbed the land.

“We want the demarcation of the 150 acres of the encroached land. The owners of the land should take possession of it,” the lawmaker said.

Stating that some non-Odia officials would put the livelihoods of countless poor people in Odisha, the Lok Sabha MP said the state government always sided with mafia elements.

“The state government is hell-bent on saving an influential Tamil woman (sic) which is not at all acceptable,” observed Sarangi, making an indirect reference to the wife of an influential mining raising contractor.

If you see any advertisements from the central government that feature Modiji’s photo, rest assured that they are directly or indirectly associated with the ruling party, i.e., BJP. And, if you come across any advertisements with green colour and Naveen’s image, it is a clear indication of their association with the ruling party of the state, i.e., BJD.

The government controls the state’s media market, leading media outlets to cosy up to those in power. Ad policies are not strictly enforced, and media outlets that go against the ruling party’s ideology lose ad orders. Advertisements and government campaigns serve only to promote the ruling party’s ideology.

Two reputed newspapers and two TV channels in the state are now suffering from this hidden policy of the Govt. For the last few days, one can observe this while checking the front pages of their products. The Sambad, which has multiple editions and is considered one of the influential newspapers in the state has been stopped from getting any advertisement from the state govt. Same for the TV wing of Sambad House.

As this newspaper has criticized the 5T concept of the Govt and published many stories blaming the system as unconstitutional, it has stopped advertisements in this newspaper. A similar equation also has been adopted by the Govt for OTV. BJP leader Baijayant Panda’s Family promotes this TV news channel. For the last five years, this TV Channel has been suffering from this policy of the Govt.

Not only BJD, but BJP also has adopted the same theory to control the media organization. As it is in power at the Union Govt, it is also controlling the DAVP  not to release advertisements to the newspapers of media organizations, who are not following their principles. For this, one of the highest circulating and oldest newspapers of the state Samaja is suffering from Central Govt campaigns.
