In a powerful display of public outrage, protesters aligned with India’s main opposition party, the Congress, brought most of Odisha to a standstill today. Launching a 12-hour bandh from dawn to dusk, the party’s state unit—backed by national leaders—demanded answers over the tragic self-immolation and death of a college student. Streets in key urban centers like Bhubaneswar and Balasore fell silent as supporters enforced the strike, leading to widespread closure of shops, schools, markets, and fuel stations.

Student’s Death Sparks Statewide Outcry

The protests were sparked by the harrowing incident at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore. On July 12, a young female student reportedly set herself ablaze in broad daylight after dousing herself in petrol. With burns covering 95% of her body, she was rushed to the local district hospital and later airlifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar. A team of ten specialists, with additional consultation from AIIMS Delhi, battled for over 60 hours to save her life. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries late Monday or early Tuesday. Her funeral took place in Bhograi, her native village, on Tuesday morning, leaving the community in mourning.

Congress Demands Justice, Not Sympathy

Congress leaders have framed the bandh as a symbolic demand for justice, pointing to systemic failures in addressing student mental health and institutional accountability. “We’re mourning one death, but the entire system has failed,” said a party volunteer during a press briefing. The party alleges gross negligence and a lack of action from authorities that could have prevented such a tragedy.

Left-Aligned Parties Join In

The protest gained momentum as leftist and regional parties threw their support behind the bandh. The CPI, CPI-M, CPI (Marxist-Leninist), Forward Bloc, Nationalist Congress Party, Samajwadi Party, and Rashtriya Janata Dal joined Congress in urging citizens and businesses to halt economic activity. This collective front intensified the shutdown, extending its impact across the state.

Essential Services Exempt, But Disruption High

To ensure critical services remained operational, Odisha’s home department issued instructions to district collectors to facilitate the movement of ambulances and emergency vehicles. Despite this, the shutdown disrupted daily life significantly, with transport, commercial activity, and educational institutions all grinding to a halt in many areas.

Questions Mount as Day Ends

As dusk falls, questions are emerging over the political and administrative response to the tragedy. Will the bandh prompt an independent investigation into the incident? Will it lead to policy shifts or institutional reforms? For now, Odisha remains in pause, with citizens awaiting clarity and justice in the days to come.
