In a significant move towards transparency and heritage management, the second phase of the inventory for the outer chamber of the Ratna Bhandar (the revered treasury of Lord Jagannath) is scheduled to take place between 8th and 10th April.
Odisha’s Law Minister, Prithviraj Harichandan, confirmed that all preparations are in full swing to ensure a seamless process. A primary focus of the government’s strategy is to conduct the audit without disrupting the daily rituals (Niti-Kanti) of the deities or hindering the thousands of devotees who visit the shrine daily for Darshan.
“We have held detailed discussions to ensure that neither the Lord’s rituals nor the public’s spiritual experience is affected during these three days,” the Minister stated.
Following the completion of the outer chamber’s audit, the administration plans to begin the highly anticipated inventory of the inner chamber (Bhitar Ratna Bhandar). Officials are optimistic that the entire valuation and documentation process will be completed within the stipulated timeframe.
Rath Yatra 2026: A Blueprint for Decongestion
Simultaneously, the state government has launched an unprecedented early preparation for the world-famous Rath Yatra. Breaking tradition, high-level planning meetings chaired by the Chief Secretary began six months in advance to tackle logistical hurdles.
A key priority for this year’s festival is the decongestion of the Grand Road (Badadanda). The government is implementing strict measures to limit the entry of unnecessary vehicles into the main thoroughfare. Key initiatives include:
 Road Widening: Expanding the arterial roads connecting to the Badadanda to streamline the flow of pilgrims.
 Traffic Management: Introducing new protocols to prevent bottlenecks during the peak days of the festival.
 Infrastructure Upgrades: Constant monitoring by the Chief Secretary’s office to ensure all civil works are completed well before the Chariot Festival begins.
The proactive stance by the Law Ministry signals a shift towards more structured temple governance, ensuring that Puri remains accessible and organized during its busiest seasons.
