The Biju Janata Dal’s (BJD) decision to stay away from the Vice-Presidential election and not cast votes, despite repeated requests from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has sparked intense debate in Odisha’s political circles. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate, CP Radhakrishnan, won comfortably without BJD’s backing, but the bigger question remains — what exactly did the BJD gain through this silent political statement?

Shrinking Parliamentary Presence

Following the September Assembly elections, BJD’s strength in national politics has seen a dramatic decline — zero members in the Lok Sabha and only seven in the Rajya Sabha. This weakened parliamentary presence has diluted its influence. Yet, BJP top brass, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, personally reached out to BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik seeking support. Despite this, BJD MPs stood firm, abstaining from the vote in the Upper House.

A Shift in BJD-NDA Equations

For years, BJD had informally supported the Modi government, endorsing several central initiatives and backing major bills in Parliament, despite no formal alliance. But in recent months, fissures have emerged. The debate on the Waqf Bill reflected internal divisions within BJD ranks, with some leaders backing it and others opposing it. The Vice-Presidential abstention signals a possible recalibration of ties between the two parties.

Playing the Equidistance Card

Political observers see this as Patnaik’s equidistance strategy at work. Supporting the INDIA bloc’s candidate risked antagonizing the BJP, while openly siding with the NDA could fuel speculation of a hidden tie-up and hurt BJD’s image among core voters. “It’s a classic case of playing it safe,” remarked a Bhubaneswar-based political analyst. “Patnaik wants to keep doors open on both sides — but at the cost of his party’s relevance.”

BJP’s Interpretation

From the BJP’s perspective, BJD’s abstention was neither harmful nor hostile. “We were going to win anyway,” a BJP spokesperson commented. “BJD’s neutrality only confirms NDA’s strength.” However, this stance has further complicated the evolving BJD-BJP dynamic, adding another layer of intrigue to Odisha’s shifting political landscape.

What Lies Ahead for BJD?

With the dust settling on the Vice-Presidential poll, speculation is mounting over whether Patnaik’s abstention will boost his bargaining power in Parliament or leave the BJD isolated. The abstention could either prove to be a strategic masterstroke or a temporary holding pattern in the ever-shifting chessboard of Indian politics.
