The Biju Janata Dal’s (BJD) decision to stay away from the Vice-Presidential election and not cast votes, despite repeated requests from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has sparked intense debate in Odisha’s political circles. Following the September Assembly elections, BJD’s strength in national politics has seen a dramatic decline — zero members in the Lok Sabha and only seven in the Rajya Sabha. The Vice-Presidential abstention signals a possible recalibration of ties between the two parties.

Playing the Equidistance Card

Political observers see this as Patnaik’s equidistance strategy at work. Supporting the INDIA bloc’s candidate risked antagonizing the BJP, while openly siding with the NDA could fuel speculation of a hidden tie-up and hurt BJD’s image among core voters. “It’s a classic case of playing it safe,” remarked a Bhubaneswar-based political analyst. “Patnaik wants to keep doors open on both sides — but at the cost of his party’s relevance.”

BJP’s Interpretation

From the BJP’s perspective, BJD’s abstention was neither harmful nor hostile. “We were going to win anyway,” a BJP spokesperson commented. “BJD’s neutrality only confirms NDA’s strength.” However, this stance has further complicated the evolving BJD-BJP dynamic, adding another layer of intrigue to Odisha’s shifting political landscape.

With the dust settling on the Vice-Presidential poll, speculation is mounting over whether Patnaik’s abstention will boost his bargaining power in Parliament or leave the BJD isolated.
