Rainfall continues across Odisha, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting more rain in several parts of the state over the next 24 hours due to the influence of a low-pressure system.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, the low-pressure area and associated cyclonic circulation currently active over south Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas are likely to trigger rainfall across Odisha until September 17.

The weather department has issued a Yellow Warning for seven districts—Nabarangpur, Koraput, Kalahandi, Malkangiri, Balangir, Nuapada and Bargarh—forecasting heavy rainfall in these areas.

Regional Meteorological Centre Director Manorama Mohanty said that the remaining districts may also experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph.

Malkangiri’s Chitrakonda recorded the highest rainfall in the state during the last 24 hours, receiving 192 mm of rain.

Odisha has recorded 1,255.4 mm of rainfall since June 1, which is around 22 per cent above the normal rainfall for the period. With the weather system remaining active, more rainfall is expected in the coming days.

Flood Situation Worsens in Malkangiri

The situation in Malkangiri district has turned serious following nearly 48 hours of continuous rainfall. Floodwater is flowing over several low-lying bridges across the district, disrupting road communication in several areas.

The situation has particularly affected the Poteru area, where floodwater has once again started flowing over a low-level bridge on National Highway 326.

Around one foot of water was reported flowing over the bridge, disrupting vehicular movement and briefly cutting off communication along the route. Although the water level receded around midnight and connectivity was restored, the subsequent rise in water levels has again affected traffic over the Poteru bridge.

With more rainfall forecast under the influence of the low-pressure system, authorities and residents in vulnerable areas are keeping a close watch on the situation.

The impact of rainfall is gradually weakening across Odisha, with dry weather prevailing in several parts of the state. As the influence of the low-pressure system over Odisha has reduced considerably, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast no major rainfall warning for the next six days.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, light to moderate rainfall may occur at a few places across coastal and interior Odisha during this period. However, no significant spell of heavy rain is expected across the state.

Dry Weather to Continue for Six Days

The low-pressure area is currently active over northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining regions. An associated cyclonic circulation extends up to around 7.6 km above mean sea level and is tilted southwestward with height.

Due to the changing weather system, rainfall activity over Odisha has reduced. Several districts are witnessing dry weather, while some areas are experiencing relatively strong sunshine.

In Bhubaneswar, the weather has remained mostly dry, although residents are experiencing slight discomfort due to humid conditions.

The current weather pattern is likely to continue until September 7. On September 8, isolated rainfall may occur at a few places. However, the Regional Meteorological Centre has indicated that there is no significant possibility of thunderstorm or lightning-related rainfall during this period.

Heavy Rain Expected in Three Districts from September 9

After nearly six days of relatively dry conditions, rainfall activity is expected to increase in some parts of Odisha from September 9.

The weather department has issued a Yellow Warning for three districts — Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Sundargarh — with the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall.

While light to moderate rain may occur at some other places, these three northern districts are likely to receive comparatively higher rainfall.

The weather department has advised residents in the warned districts to remain alert and keep track of the latest weather updates, particularly as rainfall intensity may increase from September 9.

Overall, Odisha is expected to experience a temporary reduction in rainfall activity over the next few days, before rainfall picks up again in parts of the state from September 9.
