Indore has once again secured its place as India’s cleanest city for the eighth consecutive year in the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2024-25. The announcement was made at a grand ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, where President Droupadi Murmu presented the prestigious awards organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban.

Top Cities Recognized Across Categories

In the million-plus population category, Indore retained its crown while Navi Mumbai secured second place and Surat bagged third. In the 3–5 lakh population segment, Noida emerged as the cleanest city, followed by Chandigarh and Mysuru. The rankings reflect comprehensive assessments of cleanliness, waste management, and citizen engagement across Indian cities.

Indore’s Formula for Success

Indore’s continued dominance is attributed to its rigorous waste segregation, source-level garbage reduction policies, and a deeply embedded culture of public cleanliness. Residents, street vendors, and municipal staff alike actively participate in keeping the city spotless, turning it into a model of urban hygiene for the rest of the country.

Madhya Pradesh Shines with Multiple Winners

Madhya Pradesh further cemented its reputation for cleanliness with eight of its cities receiving top honors, including Bhopal, Ujjain, and Jabalpur. Notably, Bhopal achieved second place in the overall rankings—its best performance in six years—matching its 2023 status as the second-cleanest state behind Maharashtra.

National Impact of Indore’s Cleanliness Model

Indore’s sustained leadership in sanitation continues to inspire cities nationwide to implement sustainable and people-centric cleanliness measures. As India pushes forward with its Swachh Bharat Mission, Indore stands as a shining beacon of what consistent civic engagement and strong urban planning can achieve.

Smart City Bhubaneswar stinks. Bhubaneswar turns garbage dump under UD Secy. Mathi Vathnanan10-yr tenure. Scams worth crores. Favour to non-Odia contractors alleged. High level probe demanded.

The waste management and sanitation services in ‘Smart City’ Bhubaneswar are in a mess as a result of large-scale corruption and tender fixing in the Housing and Urban Development Department in the 10-year tenure of Secretary G Mathi Vathanan.

It is alleged that the Vathanan has shown favouritism to non-Odia contractors and dubious agencies from outside the State in awarding projects, which has caused a loss of crores of rupees to the exchequer. What’s more, despite spending around Rs 100 crores annually, Bhubaneswar has slipped drastically in position among the Smart Cities of India in terms of cleanliness. Smart City Bhubaneswar stinks
