DMK Boycotts Floor Test

While the Vijay-led government comfortably proved its majority, the opposition M. K. Stalin-led DMK, which won 59 seats in the Assembly elections, boycotted the trust vote proceedings and stayed away from voting.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly has a total strength of 234 seats, with the majority mark set at 118.

Seat Distribution in Tamil Nadu Assembly

The recently concluded Assembly elections produced the following results:

TVK: 108 seats

With DMK abstaining from the voting process, the effective majority number in the House was reduced, making the floor test easier for the TVK government.

Support from Allies and AIADMK MLAs

The Vijay-led government received support from several parties including Congress, CPI, CPM, IUML, and AMMK.

Significantly, 24 AIADMK legislators also voted in favour of the TVK government during the trust vote. One AIADMK MLA remained absent during the voting.

Meanwhile, PMK’s four MLAs and the lone BJP MLA maintained silence during the proceedings.

Divided Stand Within AIADMK

AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami opposed the Vijay government’s claim of majority.

Tamil Nadu Election Timeline

Voting for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections was held in a single phase on April 23, while the results were announced on May 4.

TVK emerged as the single largest party in the state by winning 108 seats, marking a major political breakthrough for Vijay in his first major electoral contest.

Vijay Issues Major Order After Becoming Chief Minister

Soon after assuming office as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay issued a major directive targeting liquor outlets in the state.

The Chief Minister ordered the closure of 717 state-run liquor shops located within 500 metres of temples, schools, and bus stands.

The decision has sparked significant political discussion across the state, with supporters describing it as a strong social reform measure aimed at protecting educational and religious spaces.

Superstar-turned-politician Vijay takes oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, marking a historic political change after nearly 60 years.

In a dramatic political development, Tamil Nadu has witnessed the rise of a new government after nearly six decades. Defeating several established political giants, actor-turned-politician Vijay, popularly known as Vijay Thalapathy, has taken oath as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

The massive political change marks the first time in around 60 years that a party other than the DMK or AIADMK has come to power in the state. Vijay’s party, “Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam” (TVK), emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly elections and eventually formed the government with outside support.

Grand Oath-Taking Ceremony in Chennai

The grand swearing-in ceremony was held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai amid the presence of lakhs of enthusiastic supporters and political leaders.

Tamil Nadu Governor R. V. Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay. The stadium echoed with cheers as thousands of fans celebrated the superstar’s transition from cinema icon to Chief Minister.

During the ceremony, Vijay pledged his loyalty to the Constitution of India and promised to discharge his duties without fear or favour. He vowed to uphold the sovereignty and integrity of the nation and ensure justice for all citizens in accordance with the Constitution and the law.

From Superstar to Chief Minister

Vijay’s journey from being one of Tamil cinema’s biggest superstars to becoming the Chief Minister has created history in Indian politics. His popularity among youth and common people played a major role in reshaping Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.

Supporters described the moment as “historic,” saying Tamil Nadu’s political history has changed forever. Huge crowds gathered across Chennai to witness the oath-taking ceremony, reflecting the massive public support behind the new leader.

Political Challenges Before Government Formation

However, the road to power was far from easy for Vijay and his party. Although Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam won 108 seats in the Assembly elections and emerged as the single largest party, the majority mark required to form the government was 118 seats.

For nearly five days after the election results, intense political negotiations and uncertainty continued in the state. Vijay reportedly held multiple meetings with the Governor while opposition parties attempted to block his path to power.

Congress, Left Parties and VCK Extend Support

The political deadlock finally ended after the Congress, Left parties and VCK extended support to Vijay’s party. With the backing of 120 MLAs, Vijay successfully staked claim to form the government.

Political analysts believe the formation of the new government could mark the beginning of a new era in Tamil Nadu politics, ending the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK.

Beginning of a New Political Era

The rise of Vijay as Chief Minister is being seen as one of the biggest political upsets in recent Indian political history. His victory has not only energized his supporters but has also sparked discussions across the country about the growing influence of film personalities in politics.

As the new government takes charge, all eyes will now be on Vijay’s leadership and the promises made by his party during the election campaign.

After more than five decades of Dravidian political dominance, Tamil Nadu is witnessing a major political shift. The long-standing influence of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has been challenged by actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

In a stunning electoral performance, TVK has emerged as the single largest party in the state, reshaping the political landscape and breaking the long-held dominance of Dravidian parties.

TVK Emerges on Top, But Falls Short of Majority

Despite its impressive showing, TVK has not yet crossed the majority mark of 118 seats required to form the government. The party is currently leading in around 110 seats, leaving the state in a hung assembly scenario.
The AIADMK has positioned itself as the second-largest party with leads in approximately 64 seats, while the ruling DMK has slipped to third place with around 40 seats.

All eyes are now on Vijay’s next move as political negotiations and alliance possibilities come into focus.

Strong Urban Surge, Especially in Chennai

TVK has recorded a sweeping performance in urban regions, particularly in Chennai.

The party is leading in 31 out of 37 seats in Chennai.

It is also ahead in 49 out of 65 urban constituencies statewide.

This significant urban shift is being seen as a major setback for the DMK, which traditionally held strong influence in these areas.

Gains in Southern and Rural Regions

TVK’s performance is not limited to cities. In southern Tamil Nadu, the party is leading in 27 out of 58 seats, emerging as a dominant force in the region.
Meanwhile, AIADMK has managed to retain much of its rural base, leading in 49 out of 116 rural constituencies. However, TVK has made notable inroads even in these areas, leading in 33 rural seats.

Key Constituency Battles

Vijay is currently leading in both Perambur and Trichy East constituencies, strengthening his political standing.
In a surprising development, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin is trailing behind a TVK candidate in Kolathur, indicating a significant shift in voter sentiment.

Big Names Trail Amid TVK Wave

The strong performance of TVK has impacted several prominent leaders across parties:

Tamilisai Soundararajan is trailing in Mylapore.

State BJP chief Nainar Nagendran is behind in Sattur.

Senior AIADMK leader B. Valarmathi is trailing in Thousand Lights.

The TVK surge has effectively swept across key constituencies, challenging established political figures.

A New Political Era in the Making

The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election could mark the beginning of a new political era in the state. While TVK has emerged as the largest party, its inability to secure a clear majority leaves the door open for post-poll alliances and strategic negotiations.

As the final results take shape, the focus now shifts to whether Vijay can convert this electoral momentum into a stable government.

Radhakrishnan. Sources said Singh enquired about Patnaik’s health while also directly requesting BJD’s backing, citing the need for cross-party consensus in the high-stakes contest.

NDA Announces C.P. Radhakrishnan as Candidate

The BJP parliamentary board, chaired by party president J.P. Nadda in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and senior leaders, formally named C.P. Radhakrishnan as the NDA’s candidate. Currently the Governor of Maharashtra, Radhakrishnan is seen as a seasoned BJP veteran and a strong contender for the vice presidency.

Radhakrishnan’s Political Journey

Born on October 20, 1957, in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan began his career as a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) volunteer before joining the Bharatiya Jan Sangh. As state BJP president in Tamil Nadu, he led a remarkable 93-day rath yatra (2003–2006) on issues like river interlinking, anti-terror campaigns, and the eradication of untouchability. The campaign strengthened his image as a grassroots mobiliser.

Parliamentary and Administrative Roles

Radhakrishnan was elected twice to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore (1998, 1999), where he served on committees related to textiles, finance, and public sector enterprises. His administrative career has included terms as Governor of Jharkhand, Telangana, and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, before taking charge as Maharashtra’s Governor in July 2024. His gubernatorial roles showcased his administrative acumen across diverse political landscapes.

A Signal to the South

Analysts view Radhakrishnan’s nomination as a strategic message to southern India, blending ideological roots with governance experience. The NDA’s outreach to regional players such as the BJD underscores the importance of coalition politics in national elections. With Singh actively engaging regional leaders, the NDA is pushing to build a broader consensus.

Will BJD Tilt the Balance?

The BJD’s response is now being closely watched. Patnaik’s support could help the NDA project a united face and potentially smooth the way for a historic consensus election. For the BJP, Radhakrishnan’s mix of activism and statesmanship is expected to dominate the campaign narrative, while the focus remains on whether regional allies will play along in this critical political exercise.
