Heavy Rain Brings Relief from Heat and Humidity

Mumbai witnessed heavy rainfall on Sunday morning, marking the city’s first significant spell of rain this season. The showers brought much-needed relief to residents who had been enduring prolonged heat and humid weather conditions over the past several weeks.

Several parts of the city received moderate to heavy rainfall, providing a welcome respite from soaring temperatures and discomfort caused by high humidity levels.

Monsoon Progress Delayed but Set to Advance

The southwest monsoon had reached South Konkan earlier this month. However, its progress stalled near Solapur from June 8 onwards, delaying further advancement into several regions.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), weather conditions have now become favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance further across Maharashtra by June 23. Meteorologists attribute the ongoing rainfall in Mumbai to cloud formations developing along the Western Ghats.

IMD Forecasts Further Monsoon Expansion

The IMD has indicated that the monsoon is likely to advance into additional parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and Chhattisgarh by June 23. Weather systems supporting the monsoon’s progression have become active, raising hopes for widespread rainfall across central and eastern India.

Satellite imagery also shows increasing cloud cover over several regions, suggesting enhanced rainfall activity in the coming days.

Rainfall Expected Across Central India

Weather experts have forecast rainfall across Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh between June 21 and June 26. While pre-monsoon activity remains active in many parts of the country, the arrival of the monsoon is expected to bring more widespread and consistent rainfall.

The advancing monsoon is likely to provide relief to agricultural regions awaiting seasonal rains for sowing activities.

Heatwave Conditions Persist in Several States

Despite increasing rainfall activity, high temperatures continue to affect several states across India. Temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius have been recorded in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Telangana.

Uttar Pradesh’s Banda remained the hottest location in the country on Saturday, recording a maximum temperature of 44.2 degrees Celsius. Delhi also witnessed temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

Monsoon Reaches 19 States in 15 Days

The southwest monsoon has expanded rapidly and has already covered 19 states within 15 days of its onset. However, its progress has remained stalled for the past nine days near Maharajganj on the Uttar Pradesh-Bihar border.

Meteorologists expect the current weather systems to help the monsoon regain momentum and move further north and east over the next few days.

Relief on the Horizon

While intense heat continues to grip many regions, the renewed advance of the southwest monsoon offers hope for cooler temperatures and improved weather conditions. The rainfall in Mumbai signals the beginning of a more active monsoon phase that is expected to spread across large parts of the country in the coming week.

Severe Heatwave to Continue Across India Till May 22, IMD Issues Warning

India continues to reel under intense summer heat, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning that severe to very severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist across several parts of the country till May 22.

According to the IMD, temperatures are expected to rise further in northern and central India over the next few days, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Delhi Temperature May Touch 45 Degrees Celsius

The national capital New Delhi is expected to witness a sharp rise in temperature, with mercury likely to increase by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius.

On Sunday, the city is expected to experience partly cloudy skies along with strong winds blowing at speeds of 20–30 kmph and gusts reaching up to 40 kmph. Thunderstorm activity is also likely in some areas.

The maximum temperature in Delhi is expected to remain close to 44°C initially, but clear skies in the following days could push temperatures further up to 45°C. The IMD has also warned that nights will remain unusually warm, adding to public discomfort.

Heatwave Conditions to Persist in Several States

The IMD said heatwave conditions are likely to continue in parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, as well as some areas of Konkan and Goa.

Weather officials stated that temperatures in northern and central India are rising rapidly, while western Himalayan regions may witness an increase of 3 to 4 degrees Celsius in the coming days.

Experts warned that prolonged exposure to extreme heat could pose serious health risks, especially for children, elderly citizens, and outdoor workers.

Rain and Thunderstorms Likely in Northeast and Southern India

While most parts of the country continue to face scorching heat, several northeastern and southern states are expected to receive moderate rainfall and thunderstorms due to Kalbaisakhi activity.

States likely to witness rain and gusty winds include Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and parts of Andhra Pradesh.

Light Rain Expected in Some Northern and Central States

The weather department has also forecast light rainfall in isolated places across Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh over the next few days.

The IMD has advised people to avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours and remain hydrated as the severe heatwave continues across large parts of the country.

Extreme Heat Likely Across Western Odisha
A severe heatwave is expected to grip western parts of Odisha, with temperatures likely to soar up to 45°C in districts such as Titlagarh, Balangir, Sonepur, Sambalpur, and Jharsuguda. Several other regions including Bargarh, Rourkela, Angul, Bhawanipatna, and Boudh may also witness temperatures rising up to 43°C.

The weather department has issued this forecast, warning of intense heat conditions continuing at least until April 19.

Heatwave Conditions to Intensify
Interior parts of Odisha are also expected to experience extreme heat, making daily life difficult for residents. Hot winds and rising temperatures are likely to disrupt normal activities, especially during daytime hours.

Recent temperature records already indicate rising heat levels, with Titlagarh recording 42°C, Bhawanipatna 41.8°C, Jharsuguda 41.6°C, and Sambalpur, Hirakud, and Balangir around 41°C. Boudh and Nuapada have also recorded temperatures close to 40°C.

Rain and Thunderstorm Likely in Some Regions
Despite the heatwave, parts of coastal and northern Odisha may receive some relief. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and rain are expected in districts such as Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Ganjam, and Gajapati due to Kalbaisakhi activity.

On April 17, heatwave conditions will persist in Balangir, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Sonepur, while coastal and southern Odisha may experience hot and humid conditions. Northern Odisha could see scattered thunderstorms.

Weather Outlook for April 18–19
Between April 18 and 19, most parts of western Odisha will continue to experience heatwave conditions. Meanwhile, districts like Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, and Malkangiri may witness thunderstorms with lightning and rainfall, offering temporary relief.

Heatwave Impact Across India
The intense summer heat is not limited to Odisha. Several parts of India are experiencing rising temperatures. In the Delhi NCR, temperatures have reached between 38°C and 40°C in recent days.

However, weather changes are expected in northern regions. States like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana are likely to witness cloudy skies along with rainfall.

Light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and even hailstorms are expected in parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Alerts have been issued for possible hailstorms in these regions, while Punjab and Haryana may also receive rainfall in the coming days.

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for 11 coastal districts—Ganjam, Gajapati, Nayagarh, Khordha, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Puri, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak, and Balasore—for the next 24 hours. Residents in these areas are likely to face oppressive heat along with sultry conditions.

The heatwave is expected to intensify in the coming days. In parts of western Odisha, temperatures may exceed 45°C. Interior regions are also likely to witness extreme heat, with districts like Balangir, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Sonepur expected to experience heatwave conditions. A yellow alert has been issued for these areas as well.

Recent Temperature Records Across the State
Over the past 24 hours, several regions have already recorded high temperatures. Titlagarh registered 41.5°C, while Bhawanipatna and Balangir recorded 41°C each. Jharsuguda reported 40.7°C, Hirakud 40°C, and Sambalpur 40.1°C. Meanwhile, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded comparatively lower temperatures at 37.7°C and 37.4°C, respectively.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that heatwave conditions will prevail in many parts of interior Odisha on April 17 and 18. Coastal districts will continue to suffer from high heat and humidity, with little relief expected.

With minimal chances of thunderstorms like Kalbaisakhi, the sky is expected to remain mostly clear across the state. Weather expert Professor Surendranath Pashupalak has indicated that the current weather pattern will continue to push temperatures above normal levels throughout the week, making conditions increasingly harsh for residents across Odisha.
