The intense heatwave conditions across Odisha have shown signs of easing, and temperatures are expected to decline further in the coming days. However, residents may continue to experience hot and humid weather, particularly in western parts of the state where relief from the heat is likely to remain limited.

Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms accompanied by rain in several parts of western and interior Odisha on Saturday. Wind speeds are expected to reach 50–60 kmph in some areas.

An Orange Warning has been issued for the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur due to the possibility of severe thunderstorms and strong winds. Under the influence of Kalbaisakhi conditions, several places in coastal and southern Odisha are also likely to receive rainfall accompanied by lightning and thunder.

Rainfall Activity to Continue Till June 4

According to the weather forecast, coastal, interior, and southern Odisha are likely to witness thunderstorms and rainfall on Sunday as well. Rainfall activity is expected to continue across northern and southern Odisha until June 4, providing temporary relief from the prevailing heat conditions.

Western Odisha Continues to Sizzle

Despite the expected rainfall, temperatures remain high in western Odisha. Bolangir recorded the highest maximum temperature of 43.1°C on Friday, followed by Titlagarh at 43°C and Sambalpur at 42.2°C.

Other major temperature recordings included:

In contrast, most places in coastal, northern, and southern Odisha recorded temperatures between 36°C and 37°C.

IMD Releases Monsoon Rainfall Outlook

The IMD has also released its seasonal rainfall outlook for the southwest monsoon period from June to September. According to the forecast, northern and northeastern India are expected to receive near-normal rainfall, ranging between 94% and 106% of the Long Period Average (LPA).

However, central India, the southern peninsular region, and northwestern India are likely to receive below-normal rainfall, with precipitation expected to remain below 94% of the LPA.

Below-Normal Rainfall Likely in Monsoon Core Zone

Odisha, which falls within the country’s monsoon core zone, is also expected to receive less than 94% of its long-term average rainfall during the monsoon season. This raises concerns over the impact on agriculture and water resources in the state.

El Niño May Influence Odisha’s Monsoon

IMD Director General Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra has warned that El Niño conditions are likely to influence the monsoon this year. According to IMD estimates, there is a 92% probability of El Niño impacting the monsoon season.

El Niño is expected to remain in a weak phase during June, strengthen to a weak-to-moderate phase in July and August, and intensify further by September. The weather phenomenon could contribute to reduced rainfall across several parts of India, including Odisha.

Weather Department Advises Vigilance

The IMD has advised residents to remain alert during thunderstorm activity, especially in districts under warning alerts. Farmers and outdoor workers have been urged to follow weather advisories as the state experiences a transition from intense summer heat towards the monsoon season.
