Persistent monsoon rains have disrupted normal life across Odisha, washing away a key bridge in Mayurbhanj and prompting weather alerts across several districts. As flood and landslide situations worsen in Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and Gujarat, authorities have intensified rescue operations and placed affected regions on high alert.

The southwest monsoon has intensified across the country, triggering widespread rainfall and flood-like conditions in several states. While Odisha continues to receive persistent rainfall under the influence of an active monsoon, heavy downpours have washed away a bridge in Mayurbhanj district. Meanwhile, flood and landslide situations have turned critical in Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, and Gujarat.

According to weather officials, the monsoon remains active over Odisha due to the combined influence of a monsoon trough and a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rainfall at several places in the coming days and issued Yellow and Orange alerts for multiple districts.

During the past 24 hours, two locations in the state recorded heavy rainfall, while several other areas received moderate showers. Strong winds of 35 to 45 kmph are also expected along the Odisha coast till July 27, prompting authorities to advise fishermen not to venture into the sea.

Bridge Washed Away in Mayurbhanj

Continuous rainfall over the past four days has caused the Tangana River to swell, washing away the Gada Bridge in Kochiladihi Panchayat under Udala block in Mayurbhanj district.

The bridge served as a vital road link between Udala and Balasore. Its collapse has disrupted connectivity for nearly eight panchayats, leaving thousands of residents struggling to commute and access essential services.

Floods and Landslides Hit Other States

The impact of the monsoon is being felt across several parts of India.

In Jammu & Kashmir, four days of continuous rainfall and landslides have severely disrupted normal life. Rising water levels in the Chenab River have forced authorities to open multiple gates of the Salal Dam, while residents from 654 vulnerable villages are being shifted to safer locations.

In Assam, heavy flooding has inundated parts of Guwahati, including Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar and stretches of National Highway-27, where knee-deep water has brought traffic to a standstill.

Similarly, flood conditions have worsened in Surat, Valsad, Navsari and Junagadh in Gujarat. Rescue teams from the NDRF, SDRF, Coast Guard and the Indian Air Force have jointly evacuated more than 22,000 people to safer places.

Administration on High Alert

With rainfall expected to continue over the next few days, authorities in the affected states have been placed on high alert. Disaster response teams remain on standby as officials monitor the evolving weather situation and urge people in vulnerable areas to remain cautious and follow official advisories.
