Sweden has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the world’s first 100% cashless country, with nearly all financial transactions conducted digitally. Driven by the widespread use of the Swish app and supported by strong digital infrastructure, the nation’s shift marks a new era in global financial systems. The central bank is also developing the e-Krona to ensure inclusivity in this digital transformation.

Stockholm, Nov 12: In a historic transformation, Sweden has officially become the world’s first 100 per cent cashless nation, marking a revolutionary shift in the way financial transactions are conducted. The milestone, achieved through widespread adoption of digital payment systems, has set a new global benchmark for cashless economies.

What began as a gradual move toward digitalisation has now turned into a full-fledged national transformation. Driven by technological advancements and public acceptance, Sweden’s cashless journey represents one of the most ambitious and successful transitions in modern financial history.

Swish Leads the Digital Payment Movement

At the heart of Sweden’s cashless revolution is Swish, a mobile payment application launched in 2012 by the country’s largest banks. Today, more than three-quarters of Sweden’s population — around 8 million people — use Swish for instant, real-time payments.

From cafes and shops to churches and local markets, signs reading “No Cash Accepted” have become the norm. In 2010, cash accounted for 40% of transactions; by 2023, that figure plummeted to below 1%, and by 2025, physical money has all but disappeared.

Elderly Citizens Join the Digital Wave

Defying stereotypes, older Swedes have also embraced the digital payment revolution. This widespread adoption has been supported by the country’s strong digital infrastructure and the high level of trust citizens place in their financial institutions.

However, authorities remain cautious about inclusivity. Concerns persist over whether rural communities and the digitally less literate might be excluded from this transformation. To address this, the Sveriges Riksbank — Sweden’s central bank — is developing a digital currency called e-Krona, aimed at ensuring accessibility and financial inclusion for all.

Benefits and Concerns of a Cashless Society

Sweden’s transition offers multiple benefits: reduced transaction costs, lower rates of petty crime, and greater financial transparency. The cashless system also promotes efficiency and accountability within the economy.

Yet, experts caution that over-dependence on digital systems could pose risks during national emergencies or cyberattacks. The government has therefore emphasised cybersecurity and system resilience as top priorities in its financial planning.

A Model for the World

As countries like India continue expanding their digital payment ecosystems while cash remains dominant, Sweden’s experience stands as a powerful example. The Nordic nation’s success story demonstrates how digital innovation, strong infrastructure, and public trust can together build a truly cashless economy.
