The Odisha government celebrated World Pakhala Day with grandeur as a state-level ‘Pakhala Parab’ was held at Panthanivas in Bhubaneswar. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi attended the event and highlighted the cultural significance of Pakhala in Odia life.

“Pakhala is More Than Food” – CM

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said that Pakhala is not just a dish but an inseparable part of Odisha’s culture and tradition. He emphasized that the celebration aims to promote traditional Odia cuisine on a global platform and prevent it from fading amid growing western food influences.

Guinness Record Attempt with 1,177 Kg Pakhala

In a major highlight, the Tourism Department prepared 1,177 kg of Pakhala using 850 kg of rice in an attempt to enter the Guinness World Records. The massive preparation attracted huge public attention at the venue.

Food Distributed to Over 2,000 People

As part of the celebration, Pakhala was distributed to over 2,000 people from underprivileged communities, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the festival.

Connection with Lord Jagannath

The Chief Minister recalled his childhood memories associated with Pakhala and noted that it is not just a poor man’s food but also beloved by Lord Jagannath. At the Jagannath Temple, Pakhala and Tanka Torani are offered as sacred offerings, symbolizing simplicity and purity.

Health Benefits and Zero-Waste Food

Highlighting its nutritional value, the CM said Pakhala is rich in probiotics, helping improve digestion and eliminate harmful bacteria from the body. He also described it as a “zero-waste food”, aligning with sustainable living practices.

Global Celebration of Odia Culture

The Chief Minister noted that World Pakhala Day is now celebrated not only in Odisha but across India and globally by the Odia diaspora. He interacted virtually with Odias from countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Bahrain, and Singapore, appreciating their efforts to keep the tradition alive.

Showcasing Rich Odia Cuisine

Before the event, the CM visited a food festival at the venue, where around 326 varieties of traditional Odia dishes were displayed. He appreciated the efforts of chefs promoting Odia cuisine at national and international levels.
