Senate Passes War Powers Resolution Despite Republican Support for Trump

US President Donald Trump has suffered a major setback over the Iran conflict after the Senate backed a resolution aimed at stopping further American military action against Iran.

The US Senate voted in favour of a War Powers Resolution that directs the President to halt military operations against Iran. The resolution received support from 50 senators, while 48 senators voted against it in favour of President Trump’s position.

The development marks a significant challenge for the Trump administration, as several lawmakers from his own Republican Party also supported the resolution.

Republican Senators Break Ranks With Trump

For the first time, both chambers of the US Congress have passed a resolution under the 1973 War Powers Act seeking to restrict the President’s authority to continue military action without congressional approval.

Trump’s Republican Party currently holds a narrow majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. However, some Republican lawmakers voted against the President’s stance.

In the Senate, four Republican senators supported the resolution, while two lawmakers were absent during the voting process. A Democratic senator also voted against the resolution.

White House Rejects Resolution, Calls It Unconstitutional

Under the War Powers Act, the resolution will not be sent to the White House for President Trump’s signature. The White House has stated that the measure is unconstitutional and therefore not legally binding.

Legal experts have described the issue as a complex constitutional question that could eventually be decided by the courts.

House of Representatives Also Approves Resolution

Earlier, the resolution had also passed in the House of Representatives with support from some Republican members. A total of 215 lawmakers voted in favour, while 208 voted against it in support of Trump.

Four Republican representatives backed the resolution in the lower chamber, highlighting growing divisions within the Republican Party over the administration’s Iran policy.

The latest vote adds to the political pressure on President Trump as tensions surrounding the Iran conflict continue to escalate.
