The southwest monsoon has covered more than half of Odisha and is expected to advance further in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that a low-pressure area may form over the north Bay of Bengal around June 28, which could significantly enhance rainfall across the state. While western Odisha continues to experience heatwave conditions, thunderstorms and rain have already affected several districts, prompting heavy rainfall alerts for Rayagada, Koraput, and Gajapati.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), weather conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to progress further over the next four to five days.

Monsoon Reaches Several Parts of Odisha

While the southwest monsoon has already touched several districts in northern coastal Odisha, rainfall activity has remained below expectations in many areas. Weather experts believe that the monsoon is currently in a relatively inactive phase but is likely to strengthen in the coming days.

Low-Pressure Area Likely Around June 28

Meteorologists have indicated that a low-pressure area may form over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions around June 28. The system is expected to enhance rainfall activity across Odisha and help the monsoon become more active after a sluggish start.

The anticipated weather system could bring widespread rain to several districts and provide relief from the prevailing heat conditions.

Heatwave Conditions Persist in Western Odisha

Despite the monsoon’s arrival, several districts in western Odisha continue to experience intense heat.

On Wednesday, Boudh recorded the highest temperature in the state at 42.7°C, followed by Jharsuguda at 40.8°C, Sambalpur at 41.5°C, Hirakud at 41.4°C, Bolangir at 40.1°C, Titlagarh at 40°C, and Subarnapur at 40.1°C.

The capital city Bhubaneswar recorded 38.6°C, while Cuttack registered 37.6°C.

Temperature Likely to Fall

The weather department has forecast a gradual drop in temperatures by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the coming days as rainfall activity increases across the state.

Heatwave Warning for Bolangir

The IMD has issued a heatwave warning for Bolangir district for the next 24 hours, urging residents to take precautions against extreme heat conditions.

Thunderstorms and Rain Lash Several Districts

On Wednesday afternoon, several districts including Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bhawanipatna, Koraput, Malkangiri, Daringbadi, Paralakhemundi, and Nabarangpur witnessed thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and rainfall under the influence of Kalbaisakhi (Nor’wester) activity.

Heavy Rain Alert for Three Districts

The weather department has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Rayagada, Koraput, and Gajapati districts during the next 24 hours.

In addition, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are likely to occur in several parts of the state due to continued Kalbaisakhi activity.

Residents Advised to Stay Alert

Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity and follow weather advisories issued by the IMD. With monsoon conditions expected to strengthen by the end of the month, Odisha may witness a significant increase in rainfall in the coming weeks.

The southwest monsoon is advancing towards Odisha and is likely to enter the state within the next few days, according to weather officials. While Kalbaisakhi storms have brought rain and temporary relief from the heat, the IMD has issued thunderstorm alerts for 26 districts and warned that temperatures may rise further before monsoon rainfall intensifies.

The information was shared by Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar.

While Kalbaisakhi thunderstorms have provided temporary relief from the scorching heat and humidity, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued thunderstorm activity across most parts of the state over the next 24 hours.

Orange Alert for Eight Districts

The IMD has issued thunderstorm warnings for 26 districts, excluding Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh and Jharsuguda.

An Orange Alert has been issued for Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur districts. These areas are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate to heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph.

A Yellow Warning has been issued for the remaining 17 districts, where thunderstorms, lightning and wind speeds of 40 to 50 kmph are expected.

Heatwave Conditions Likely to Persist

Despite intermittent rainfall, the weather department has cautioned that residents may not get immediate relief from the prevailing heat. Temperatures across Odisha are expected to rise by as much as three degrees Celsius over the next three days.

Coastal and southern Odisha are likely to experience severe heat and uncomfortable humidity levels, making conditions oppressive for residents.

On Sunday, temperatures crossed 40 degrees Celsius in several parts of the state, including Bhubaneswar and many locations in western Odisha. Hot winds swept across the region from late morning before weather conditions changed dramatically in the afternoon.

Kalbaisakhi Brings Rain and Strong Winds

Several coastal districts, including Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Paradip and Balasore, witnessed heavy rain and strong winds under the influence of Kalbaisakhi storms. Intense lightning and thunder accompanied the showers, causing concern among residents.

Boudh recorded the highest daytime temperature in the state at 41.9 degrees Celsius. Titlagarh registered 41.7 degrees Celsius, while Bhawanipatna and Nayagarh recorded 41.5 degrees Celsius each. Talcher reported 41 degrees Celsius, while Balangir, Sambalpur and Sonepur recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.

Monsoon Likely to Enter Odisha Between June 10 and 13

Senior agrometeorologist Professor Surendranath Pasupalak has predicted that the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Odisha between June 10 and June 13.

According to him, monsoon activity over the Bay of Bengal had been relatively slow in recent weeks. However, significant improvement has been observed over the past two days, with the monsoon advancing further and moisture-laden winds spreading towards Odisha.

The changing weather pattern across coastal and southern Odisha, marked by frequent thunderstorms and rainfall, indicates favourable conditions for monsoon onset.

Rainfall Activity Expected to Increase

Professor Pasupalak noted that cloud cover is expected to increase between now and June 10, leading to higher humidity levels and more frequent thunderstorm activity.

As monsoon conditions strengthen, temperatures are likely to gradually decline. Rainfall activity is expected to intensify between June 12 and June 15 under the direct influence of the southwest monsoon.

Western Odisha, however, may have to wait slightly longer. The monsoon is expected to reach the region between June 12 and June 16, with widespread monsoon rains likely between June 15 and June 18.

Until then, residents of western Odisha are expected to continue experiencing intense heat, with significant relief unlikely before June 10.

The IMD has issued an Orange Warning for Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Nabarangpur districts, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rain and gusty winds of up to 60 kmph. While temperatures across Odisha are expected to rise by 2–3°C over the next few days, weather experts predict the southwest monsoon could reach the state between June 10 and 14, bringing relief from the prevailing heat and humidity.

According to the weather department, Kalbaisakhi (nor’wester) activity is expected to continue in parts of coastal, northern and southern Odisha until June 6. Widespread rainfall has also been predicted across the state on June 5 and 6.

While sporadic thunderstorms may provide temporary relief, Odisha is likely to continue experiencing hot and humid weather conditions. The IMD has warned that temperatures could rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the next four days.

Monsoon Expected to Reach Kerala on June 4

The India Meteorological Department has indicated that the southwest monsoon is likely to make its onset over Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu on June 4. Weather experts believe the monsoon could reach Odisha before the Raja festival, bringing much-needed relief from the prevailing heat and humidity.

Meteorologist Dr. Sarat Chandra Sahu said the southwest monsoon is expected to touch Kerala by June 4 or 5, though its initial progress may be slow. Between June 7 and 10, the monsoon is likely to advance further into western India.

If both the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal branches remain favourable, the monsoon could arrive in Odisha between June 13 and 16, with June 13 or 14 considered the most probable dates.

Experts Predict Odisha Monsoon Arrival Between June 10 and 14

Renowned agrometeorologist Professor Surendranath Pasupalak said various weather models indicate that the monsoon could reach Odisha between June 8 and 14. However, he believes it is unlikely to arrive before June 10.

According to his assessment, there is an 80 percent chance of the monsoon entering Odisha between June 10 and 14, while a delayed arrival around June 15 or 16 remains a possibility with a 20 percent probability.

He noted that the Bay of Bengal branch of the monsoon is currently not very active, and no organized cyclonic circulation or low-pressure system has developed over the region. Such systems generally help pull the monsoon further inland.

Heat to Persist Despite Thunderstorm Activity

Professor Pasupalak said coastal Odisha is likely to witness temperatures ranging between 36°C and 39°C, while western Odisha may experience temperatures between 39°C and 42°C. Intermittent thunderstorms are expected in some areas, and similar weather conditions are likely to continue until June 7.

Dr. Sahu also stated that rainfall activity across Odisha would remain limited until June 10. While isolated Kalbaisakhi storms may occur during evenings and nights, their impact is expected to remain localized rather than widespread.

Several Districts Record Temperatures Above 40°C

On Tuesday, Boudh recorded the state’s highest temperature at 41°C. Khordha also touched 41°C, while Sambalpur recorded 40.8°C. Talcher and Dhenkanal reported temperatures of 40°C each. Bhubaneswar recorded a maximum temperature of 38.9°C, with many other parts of the state witnessing temperatures between 38°C and 39°C.

The weather department has advised residents to remain alert during thunderstorm activity and take necessary precautions against lightning, strong winds and rising temperatures.

Scorching Heat Grips Entire State

People across Odisha are struggling to cope with an intense heatwave that has severely disrupted normal life from villages to cities. The blazing sun and extreme temperatures have made outdoor movement extremely difficult, with residents describing the heat as unbearable even during the morning hours. After 8 AM, the sun’s harsh rays are turning roads and public spaces into virtual furnaces.

The heat has become so intense that even pond water, river water, and piped water feel unusually hot to the touch. Citizens across the state are expressing concern as there appears to be little relief from the rising temperatures.

Temperatures Cross 44°C in Several Districts

According to weather observations recorded around 2:30 PM, several parts of western Odisha witnessed extreme temperatures above 44°C. Jharsuguda and Sambalpur recorded 44.4°C, while Hirakud touched 44°C. The capital city Bhubaneswar registered 41.6°C.

Similarly, temperatures reached 40.8°C in Keonjhar and 40.6°C in Rourkela. Meteorologists believe the state could record the highest temperature of the season if the current weather conditions continue.

Jharsuguda Turns Into a “Boiling Cauldron”

Industrial town Jharsuguda has emerged as one of the hottest places in Odisha. Not only the town, but rural areas across the district are also facing severe heat stress. Residents say the scorching weather has made daily life extremely difficult, especially during afternoon hours.

A few days of Kalbaisakhi showers and cloudy weather had earlier provided temporary relief. However, over the past five days, temperatures have risen rapidly. While the mercury stood at 44.6°C on Tuesday, it reportedly touched nearly 46°C on Wednesday, intensifying public discomfort.

Weather Department Raises Concern

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, temperatures this year are currently around 3°C above normal levels. Experts warn that this may indicate a worrying weather trend for the coming days.

Over the past two decades, Jharsuguda’s summer pattern has changed significantly. Crossing 45°C during May has now become increasingly common. Dry winds, lack of humidity in the atmosphere, and strong solar radiation are making conditions harsher with each passing day.

Humidity Adds to Public Misery

On Thursday, the minimum temperature in Jharsuguda was recorded at 27.6°C, while humidity levels fluctuated between 32% and 48%. The combination of extreme heat and fluctuating humidity created suffocating and highly uncomfortable conditions throughout the district.

Weather records suggest that severe summer heatwaves in Jharsuguda are no longer isolated incidents. Instead, the district has been witnessing new temperature records almost every year, raising growing concerns about climate patterns and long-term environmental changes in the region.

The intensity of the sun feels unbearable, with conditions resembling a blazing furnace. Stepping outdoors after 11 AM has become extremely difficult in both western and coastal regions. The sweltering heat and humidity are leaving people exhausted, while streets appear deserted during peak afternoon hours.

Jharsuguda recorded a scorching 44.8°C, making it the hottest place in the state. Titlagarh registered 44°C, while Sambalpur recorded 43.6°C. The Meteorological Department has issued alerts for Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Bargarh, Bolangir, and Sambalpur, warning of continued severe heatwave conditions.

Citizens are increasingly relying on umbrellas, caps, and water bottles to cope with the heat. Shops selling lassi and sugarcane juice are witnessing heavy crowds as people seek relief from the extreme temperatures.

Yellow Alert Issued for 13 Districts
A yellow warning has been issued for 13 districts, including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati. All government, government-aided, and private schools across the state will remain closed. However, pre-scheduled examinations, census-related work, and official duties will continue as planned. Initially, holidays were being declared district-wise, but now the closure has been extended to all schools statewide.

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for 11 coastal districts—Ganjam, Gajapati, Nayagarh, Khordha, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Puri, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak, and Balasore—for the next 24 hours. Residents in these areas are likely to face oppressive heat along with sultry conditions.

Temperature Likely to Soar Further
The heatwave is expected to intensify in the coming days. In parts of western Odisha, temperatures may exceed 45°C. Interior regions are also likely to witness extreme heat, with districts like Balangir, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Sonepur expected to experience heatwave conditions. A yellow alert has been issued for these areas as well.

Recent Temperature Records Across the State
Over the past 24 hours, several regions have already recorded high temperatures. Titlagarh registered 41.5°C, while Bhawanipatna and Balangir recorded 41°C each. Jharsuguda reported 40.7°C, Hirakud 40°C, and Sambalpur 40.1°C. Meanwhile, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded comparatively lower temperatures at 37.7°C and 37.4°C, respectively.

Heatwave Conditions to Persist Through April 17–18
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that heatwave conditions will prevail in many parts of interior Odisha on April 17 and 18. Coastal districts will continue to suffer from high heat and humidity, with little relief expected.

Possibility of Thunderstorms in Northern and Southern Regions
Despite the prevailing heat, some districts may witness isolated rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. On April 17, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Balasore may experience thunderstorms. Similarly, between April 18 and 19, districts such as Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri could receive rainfall with lightning.

Rising Temperatures Due to Dry and Moist Air Flow
Meteorological experts attribute the rising temperatures to the continuous flow of dry northwesterly winds from central India affecting interior Odisha. At the same time, coastal areas are experiencing moisture-laden southwesterly winds, leading to high humidity and sultry conditions.

Clear Skies to Intensify Heat Impact
With minimal chances of thunderstorms like Kalbaisakhi, the sky is expected to remain mostly clear across the state. This will result in intense solar radiation, further aggravating the heat conditions. Interior Odisha is likely to see temperatures around 41°C, with some places touching up to 44°C.

Expert Opinion on Heatwave Trends
Weather expert Professor Surendranath Pashupalak has indicated that the current weather pattern will continue to push temperatures above normal levels throughout the week, making conditions increasingly harsh for residents across Odisha.

Advisory for Residents
People are advised to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during peak hours, stay hydrated, and take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses as the state braces for extreme summer conditions.
