The Tamil Nadu government has unveiled several welfare measures in its 2026-27 Budget, including a major benefit for women by allocating ₹812 crore for a scheme that will provide an 8-gram gold coin and a silk saree to eligible women at the time of their marriage.
The announcement fulfils a key promise made by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in his election manifesto. The scheme was formally announced during the presentation of the state budget on Wednesday.
Presenting the first Budget of the TVK government in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Finance Minister N. Mary Wilson said the government remains committed to expanding welfare programmes while strengthening the state’s finances.
₹812 Crore for Women’s Marriage Assistance
Under the marriage assistance scheme, eligible women will receive an 8-gram gold coin along with a silk saree, with the government earmarking ₹812 crore for the programme in the current financial year.
The government said the initiative aims to provide financial support to families and promote the welfare of women.
Haj Subsidy Increased to ₹35,000
The Finance Minister also announced an increase in the Haj pilgrimage subsidy, raising the assistance from ₹25,000 to ₹35,000 per pilgrim.
Wilson said the enhancement reflects the government’s commitment to supporting pilgrims undertaking the annual pilgrimage.
Focus on Fiscal Reforms
The Finance Minister said the government has taken several measures to improve the state’s financial position. She credited Chief Minister Joseph Vijay for eliminating the alleged practice of “cuts” or commissions in government tenders, saying the move has improved transparency and governance.
Renewed Demand to Scrap NEET
Reiterating the state’s long-standing stand on medical admissions, the Tamil Nadu government urged the Centre to abolish the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) and restore the earlier admission system based on Class 12 examination marks.
Olympic Excellence Centres Planned
To strengthen sports infrastructure and nurture world-class athletes, the government announced an allocation of ₹5.50 crore for the establishment of 10 Olympic Centres of Excellence across Tamil Nadu.
The initiative aims to prepare athletes capable of winning Olympic gold medals and enhancing the state’s presence in international sporting events.
