Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Joseph Vijay launched a sharp attack on opposition parties, particularly the DMK, during the Assembly session on Monday.
Speaking in the Assembly, Vijay said people had historically given their mandate to leaders such as Anna, MGR and NTR, and that the same public support was now being extended to him. He said women were a major reason behind his political success and asserted that he would not tolerate derogatory remarks against them.
Vijay also levelled serious allegations against the DMK, claiming that former minister Senthil Balaji and his associates had collected money from TASMAC liquor shops. He alleged that the group was known as the “Karur gang” and accused them of systematic corruption.
Referring to corruption allegations, Vijay said the DMK had challenged him to open files relating to three departments. He said he wanted to study the Sarkaria Commission report, constituted in 1988, before taking up the issue in detail.
Vijay also alleged that DMK leaders had made controversial remarks about people who did not vote for him. The DMK, however, strongly rejected his allegations.
DMK leader R.S. Bharathi hit back at Vijay, accusing him of bringing his film-style performance into the Assembly. Bharathi pointed out that Vijay was not even born when the Sarkaria Commission case was initiated and said the allegations dated back decades.
He claimed that voters had already settled the political issues and accused Vijay of trying to mislead the public. Bharathi described Vijay’s Assembly remarks as “cheap” and said Tamil Nadu had never witnessed such a political spectacle.
