Team India Gears Up for Australia Tour: Rohit Sharma Returns, Shubman Gill Takes ODI Helm

Selectors spring a surprise as Gill replaces Rohit as ODI skipper; Virat returns, Bumrah rested.

Series to Commence on October 19

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced the Indian squad for the much-anticipated Australia tour, beginning October 19, 2025. The tour will feature a three-match ODI series followed by five T20Is. The announcement has sparked major interest, with a surprising leadership change making headlines.

Shubman Gill to Lead in ODIs

In a significant decision, the selectors have handed over the ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill, while Rohit Sharma has been relieved of his leadership duties. Rohit, however, continues as a senior batsman in the squad. This marks the first time since December 2021 that he will play without additional responsibilities. Virat Kohli, returning after a seven-month break, is also back in the ODI setup, making this tour a much-awaited comeback for him.

Squad Mixes Youth and Experience

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar, through an official press release, emphasized the balance of youth and experience in the squad. The ODI side features Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, KL Rahul, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel, and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Key Absences

The team will miss the services of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who has been rested following the ongoing West Indies Test series. Injuries have sidelined Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya, further deepening the absence of established names.

T20I Squad Led by Suryakumar Yadav

For the T20I series, Suryakumar Yadav has been named captain with Shubman Gill as vice-captain. The squad includes power-packed performers like Sanju Samson and Rinku Singh, promising high-energy encounters against the Aussies.

Fierce Contest Expected

This is India’s first ODI series in Australia since December 2020, raising expectations of intense competition. With the series concluding on November 8, cricket fans can look forward to some of the fiercest India-Australia battles in recent history.
