The Kandhamal district administration has restricted the movement of vehicular traffic and people through Kalinga Ghat along the Ganjam-Kandhamal border for two days in view of the possibility of heavy rainfall in the region.
The restriction will remain in force on September 23 and 24 following a weather forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in the area during the period.
The administration has taken the precautionary measure considering the possibility of water accumulation on Kalinga Ghat, which could increase the risk of mudslides, falling boulders and landslides.
Officials have advised people and commuters to avoid using the ghat during the restricted period to prevent any untoward incident.
Heavy Rain Raises Landslide Concerns
Kalinga Ghat is a crucial road link between Ganjam and Kandhamal districts. The hilly terrain makes the route vulnerable to landslides and falling rocks during periods of intense rainfall.
The latest restriction has been imposed as a preventive measure based on the IMD forecast. Authorities are closely monitoring the weather conditions and the situation along the route.
Major Landslide Disrupted Connectivity in 2025
Kalinga Ghat had witnessed a major landslide near Andharikote in September 2025, causing significant disruption to communication between Ganjam and Kandhamal districts.
The restoration work reportedly took around one-and-a-half months, after which movement of light vehicles was permitted on the route.
With heavy to very heavy rainfall forecast for September 23 and 24, the administration has once again opted for preventive restrictions to ensure the safety of commuters and avoid disruption caused by possible landslides or other rain-related incidents.
