Union Cabinet Approves ₹8,300-Crore Coastal Highway Project in Odisha

163-km Road Corridor to Boost Connectivity, Tourism and Economic Growth

The Union Cabinet has approved the construction of a new coastal highway in Odisha, a major infrastructure project expected to transform connectivity and economic activity across the state’s coastal region. The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The proposed highway will stretch from Rameswar to Paradip, covering approximately 163 kilometres across the districts of Khordha, Puri, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur. The project will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹8,300.79 crore.

Project to Be Built in Two Packages

The highway will be constructed in two phases. The first package includes a 79.40-km four-lane road from Rameswar to Konark at a cost of ₹5,304.80 crore. The second package consists of an 80.78-km two-lane road with paved shoulders from Konark to Paradip, costing ₹2,995.99 crore.

The project aims to strengthen Odisha’s road network and improve access to important tourist destinations, industrial hubs and coastal areas.

Travel Time to Reduce Significantly

According to officials, the new highway is expected to reduce travel time between Rameswar and Paradip by nearly two and a half hours. The corridor will allow vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 100 kmph, ensuring faster and safer movement of passengers and goods.

The project will also improve connectivity to Puri, Konark and Satapada while addressing existing road design limitations in several stretches.

Major Boost for Odisha’s Development

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi described the project as a new chapter in Odisha’s infrastructure development. He said the highway would create new opportunities in tourism, trade, logistics and regional economic growth.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project would enhance regional mobility, promote socio-economic development and reduce fuel consumption, carbon emissions and vehicle operating costs, making transportation more efficient and sustainable.
