Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026: MEA Issues Strict New Rules on Luggage, Health Checks and Travel Arrangements

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a new set of guidelines for pilgrims undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026, introducing stricter regulations regarding luggage limits, medical fitness, and entry into the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

Under the revised rules, each pilgrim will be allowed to carry only 20 kilograms of essential luggage while crossing into the Chinese-administered Tibetan region. According to the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN), the MEA has also permitted each group to carry an additional 5 kilograms of collective baggage. Since Indian food is not readily available in Tibet, a committee based in Ghaziabad has arranged to provide pilgrims with dry ration items such as rice, lentils, and spices. These supplies must be accommodated within the prescribed luggage limit.

The new guidelines also provide for a five-member support team accompanying each batch of pilgrims. The team will consist of one doctor and four cooks to assist the group throughout the journey. One of the strictest provisions introduced this year relates to health monitoring. If the designated doctor determines that any pilgrim is medically unfit or unable to continue due to health-related or other concerns, the pilgrimage for that individual will end immediately at that point.

To address medical emergencies in the remote and high-altitude terrain, pilgrims will be allowed to carry medicines for up to 20 different types of ailments as part of their personal medical kits. The move is aimed at ensuring better preparedness during the challenging trek through mountainous regions.

The first batch of pilgrims is scheduled to depart from New Delhi on June 30 and is expected to reach the Dharchula base camp on July 5. Meanwhile, a team from the Ministry of External Affairs will arrive in Pithoragarh on June 25 to review preparations for the pilgrimage. The officials will inspect facilities along the Lipulekh route and assess the arrangements made on the Indian side of the border to ensure that all necessary infrastructure and support systems are in place before the commencement of the yatra.
