Argentina superstar Lionel Messi made a stunning return to the scoresheet after the heartbreaking FIFA World Cup final defeat, scoring twice to guide Inter Miami to a 4-2 victory over Atletico San Luis in the ongoing Leagues Cup on Wednesday.
With his brace, Messi became the all-time leading goalscorer in Leagues Cup history, taking his tally in the competition to 14 goals across 12 appearances. He moved ahead of Los Angeles FC forward Denis Bouanga, who has scored 13 goals in the tournament.
The match started with San Luis taking an early lead in the 4th minute when David Rodriguez scored with a header. However, Messi quickly brought Inter Miami back into the contest, equalising in the 11th minute.
The Argentine legend struck again just before halftime, scoring in the 44th minute to give Inter Miami a 2-1 advantage at the break.
Inter Miami continued their attacking momentum in the second half, with Telasco Segovia and Michael adding one goal each to complete the 4-2 victory. San Luis managed another goal, but it was not enough to stop Messi and his teammates from securing another win.
The victory extended Inter Miami’s unbeaten run in the ongoing Leagues Cup. The club has played eight matches in the tournament so far without suffering a defeat.
Messi’s latest performance further strengthened his impact since joining Inter Miami, as the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward continues to set new records and lead the club’s title ambitions.
The brace also marked an important personal milestone for Messi, who returned to his goal-scoring best after Argentina’s emotional FIFA World Cup final loss.
