Odisha Assembly Special Session Focuses on Women’s Role in Democracy

CM Majhi Emphasises Political, Social, and Economic Empowerment of Women in Special Session

A special one-day session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly witnessed an extensive discussion on the theme “Contribution of Women in Indian Democracy,” with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi presenting a detailed perspective on women’s empowerment and political participation.

Beyond Economic Empowerment

Addressing the House, the Chief Minister emphasized that women’s empowerment should not be limited to financial independence alone. He stated that true empowerment means enabling women to take decisions for themselves, their families, and society. According to him, social, economic, and political empowerment must go hand in hand to ensure real progress.

Women Breaking Barriers Across Sectors

Highlighting women’s growing contribution, Majhi noted that women in India have excelled in diverse fields—from managing households to driving buses and even flying fighter jets. He cited examples of women officers in the armed forces and their role in national security operations as a reflection of modern India’s “Nari Shakti.”

Strong Presence in Education

The Chief Minister underlined the crucial role of women in the education sector. Referring to UDISE+ data, he said that women constitute over 53% of teachers in school education and around 43% in higher education. “Women are shaping the future of the nation by nurturing the next generation of doctors, engineers, and leaders,” he said.

Push for Political Empowerment

Majhi stressed the importance of women’s reservation in Parliament and state assemblies. He reiterated support for the Women’s Reservation Bill and criticized past governments for delays in its implementation. He expressed confidence that women will receive adequate representation in legislative bodies in the coming years.

Government Schemes Driving Change

Highlighting welfare initiatives, the Chief Minister spoke about schemes like Subhadra Yojana and Lakhpati Didi, aimed at making women financially self-reliant. He also mentioned that under housing schemes, a significant percentage of homes are registered in women’s names, strengthening their social status.

Additionally, schemes like Mamata Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana have provided financial assistance to lakhs of women, improving maternal health and well-being.

Grassroots Leadership and Representation

Majhi pointed out that nearly 14.5 lakh women are currently serving as elected representatives in Panchayati Raj institutions across India. He said that the Nari Shakti Vandan Act will further accelerate women’s participation in governance.

Opposition Concerns and Debate

Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik had earlier called for a special session to discuss the bill, raising concerns over representation and seat distribution. However, the Chief Minister dismissed these concerns, stating that any future increase in parliamentary seats would proportionally benefit states like Odisha.

The special Assembly session highlighted the growing role of women in shaping India’s democratic framework. With increased participation, policy support, and institutional backing, Odisha aims to strengthen women’s empowerment and ensure equal opportunities in every sphere.
