Major Rural Road Expansion Initiative
Odisha marked a significant milestone in rural infrastructure development with the launch of the fourth phase of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-IV). The initiative aims to strengthen rural connectivity and accelerate economic growth in remote regions of the state.
The programme was formally inaugurated in Rayagada in the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
₹1,700 Crore Investment for Rural Roads
Under PMGSY-IV, over ₹1,700 crore has been approved for Odisha. The project will construct 1,702 km of all-weather roads covering 898 villages across eight districts, including Rayagada, Koraput, Kandhamal, Keonjhar, Khordha, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, and Sambalpur.
A total of 827 new road projects will be implemented under a 60:40 funding pattern between the Centre and the State, ensuring improved last-mile connectivity for tribal and remote regions.
Additional Central Support for Housing and Irrigation
The Centre also sanctioned ₹630 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) and ₹30 crore under the WDC-PMKSY 2.0 watershed development programme for Odisha.
Officials highlighted that these investments will significantly boost rural housing, agriculture, and water resource management.
Vision for Integrated Rural Development
Chief Minister Majhi emphasized that rural development remains central to Odisha’s growth strategy. Inspired by the vision of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the state aims to bring all villages into the mainstream through strong road networks and basic infrastructure.
He also outlined the “Mission Powar” (Power-Water-Road) initiative to ensure electrification, drinking water, and road access for small habitations.
Focus on Agriculture and Long-Term Growth
The Centre plans to deploy scientific teams to Odisha to promote integrated farming systems and develop “Seed Villages” to enhance farmers’ income and agricultural diversification.
The initiative aligns with the broader national vision of rural transformation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Conclusion
Officials stated that PMGSY-IV will play a crucial role in reducing rural isolation, improving livelihoods, and supporting Odisha’s goal of becoming a developed state by 2036.
