Odisha Reels Under Severe Heatwave as Temperature Touches 46°C in Jharsuguda

Extreme heatwave sweeps across Odisha as Jharsuguda records nearly 46°C; rising temperatures and dry winds make life unbearable for residents across the state.

Scorching Heat Grips Entire State

People across Odisha are struggling to cope with an intense heatwave that has severely disrupted normal life from villages to cities. The blazing sun and extreme temperatures have made outdoor movement extremely difficult, with residents describing the heat as unbearable even during the morning hours. After 8 AM, the sun’s harsh rays are turning roads and public spaces into virtual furnaces.

The heat has become so intense that even pond water, river water, and piped water feel unusually hot to the touch. Citizens across the state are expressing concern as there appears to be little relief from the rising temperatures.

Temperatures Cross 44°C in Several Districts

According to weather observations recorded around 2:30 PM, several parts of western Odisha witnessed extreme temperatures above 44°C. Jharsuguda and Sambalpur recorded 44.4°C, while Hirakud touched 44°C. The capital city Bhubaneswar registered 41.6°C.

Similarly, temperatures reached 40.8°C in Keonjhar and 40.6°C in Rourkela. Meteorologists believe the state could record the highest temperature of the season if the current weather conditions continue.

Jharsuguda Turns Into a “Boiling Cauldron”

Industrial town Jharsuguda has emerged as one of the hottest places in Odisha. Not only the town, but rural areas across the district are also facing severe heat stress. Residents say the scorching weather has made daily life extremely difficult, especially during afternoon hours.

A few days of Kalbaisakhi showers and cloudy weather had earlier provided temporary relief. However, over the past five days, temperatures have risen rapidly. While the mercury stood at 44.6°C on Tuesday, it reportedly touched nearly 46°C on Wednesday, intensifying public discomfort.

Weather Department Raises Concern

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, temperatures this year are currently around 3°C above normal levels. Experts warn that this may indicate a worrying weather trend for the coming days.

Over the past two decades, Jharsuguda’s summer pattern has changed significantly. Crossing 45°C during May has now become increasingly common. Dry winds, lack of humidity in the atmosphere, and strong solar radiation are making conditions harsher with each passing day.

Humidity Adds to Public Misery

On Thursday, the minimum temperature in Jharsuguda was recorded at 27.6°C, while humidity levels fluctuated between 32% and 48%. The combination of extreme heat and fluctuating humidity created suffocating and highly uncomfortable conditions throughout the district.

Weather records suggest that severe summer heatwaves in Jharsuguda are no longer isolated incidents. Instead, the district has been witnessing new temperature records almost every year, raising growing concerns about climate patterns and long-term environmental changes in the region.
